What The Denmark | Danish Culture for Expats, Internationals and Danes

Danish culture can be pretty confusing, especially if you are not from Denmark.

This podcast is on a mission to resolve cultural confusion in the country, and help anyone understand how people in this unique country think and behave.

Co-hosts Sam Floy (British podcaster, "The Outsider") and Josefine Volqvartz (Danish TV journalist, "The Insider") speak to experts and members of the public to understand and explain why something so normal in Danish culture is confusing to outsiders.

Rather than simply point fun, or say something like "Danes have an ironic sense of humour" we go deep, by speaking to experts to explain why.

Importantly, this show is as much for Danes as it is non-Danes.

What The Denmark is an educational, entertaining and inclusive show where we take a curious look at things that seem normal in Denmark, and get to the bottom of why.

The show is aimed at everyone with a connection to Denmark, and people around the world looking to learn more about the happiest country in the world.

If you've ever felt that you want to understand more about Denmark and Danish culture, then this is the podcast for you!

    Every Country Needs This
Too bad every country doesn’t have a similar podcast. I am impressed with the presenters and the subject matter. I hope more episodes are coming in 2025. Lego should sponsor this!

Love the cultural straight talk from Josefine and Sam,, and guests always add value
Our daughter is spending her semester abroad in Copenhagen. We booked a trip to visit her and discovered WTD after searching for Denmark podcasts. For weeks leading up to our trip, WTD kept me company while I gave my dog his daily walk. I learned a ton - about Danish etiquette and humor, about flyverdragter and Janteloven, and of course about single duvets and winter bathing. I'm embarrassed to admit that I had no idea the history of the Vikings and Denmark, or that New Nordic cuisine was a thing. But thanks to WTD, now I do. By the time we landed at Copenhagen Airport, I knew that if I bumped into someone, there was no need for "I'm sorry" and "excuse me." I was not to call the police if a baby was left unattended in a stroller outside a restaurant. And when I bought a ticket for a Vinterjazz performance, someone at Funke was not going to scan my ticket at the door. In fact, THEY TRUSTED THAT I HAD BOUGHT A TICKET, would never ask to see it, and I was to find a seat and simply enjoy the show. WTD is an incredible resource. Thank you for making our visit so much richer. We felt like Danish insiders. Now that we're home, we can't quit WTD and continue to listen to shows!

A great podcast for an American moving to Denmark! I hope to hear an episode on what racism looks like in Denmark, especially in regards to Muslims and Polish people.

    Fun to listen to!
Just listened to What the Denmark and found it fascinating and fun. It was more thoughtful than I realized it would be, with interviews by experts, field trips, and interesting anecdotes. Definitely on my regular podcast list. Please record more shows!
