EG924Love all the topics and guests!I love your show and listening to all the topics you cover. Tristan’s a wonderful host and the conversations are rarely dull. I’ve learned so much and always look forward to the next topic. Thank you for showing the ancient part of our history some love and providing such a great podcast to cover it all!

swonderFills in the GapsIf you have an interest in ancient history but your knowledge is spotty, The Ancients is on target for you. Tristian Hughes is delightful and he does a great job carrying the convo forward.

djbvk21Best POD CastTristen has the best voice and is so knowledgeable. Has amazing guests like Natalie especially speaking on Greek mythology. Thank you.

rev-jek33Stick with TristenGreat show when Tristen hosts it. Other host talks too much and tries to too hard to be hip or cute

Squirrel ShenanigansEpisode 163Interesting episode. Author of Bonfire of the Vanities was Tom Wolfe, btw.

KentuckyRobert!!!!Awesome Inuit show!!

Sunny smlMacrinus episodeThe host kept saying “What an interesting story” when it was not interesting at all.

Chey.mullHistory/archeology nerd!!As someone who has a dream of one day becoming an archeologist, I find this podcast outstanding! I am learning so many new things that I never knew I needed to learn about. There are some topics I wish would get more air time, but overall this is an excellent, informative, and wonderfully done podcast!!

ekconwayJodi Magness bias is unfortunateAbsolutely love Tristan Hughes’ curiosity and the exciting educational journey he takes us on with the wonderful guests of this show! I have been researching Israel/Palestine for context on the trauma currently occurring in this part of the world, and this podcast has been extremely helpful. I am a bit frustrated having to listen to *another* interview with Jodi Magness on this topic however. The way she presents biased assumptions as fact, with occasional comments such as “I should say, some of this is controversial…” is annoying at best, but extremely harmful to the discovery of dynamic and honest perspective. I have been so impressed with the absolute wealth of knowledge other guests present with clarity and humility — seemingly unencumbered religious or political dogma. Thank you!

grannyartemishappypandaGreat podcastVery much a favorite. Especially well produced are the Egyptian gods series. The myths at the beginning of those five episodes are spellbinding, related by a consummate storyteller with eerily gorgeous voice, accent, and cadences.

Bldh92The Best!Truly the best historical podcast out there. Love Triston and his guests he chooses. I’m here in the states. Wish I could hear him and a guest live!
-

harpsforjoyThe Ancients: The Fall of Roman BritainThis was a great Pod. I hope that Tristian has these two guests on again. They made this time period really relatable and interesting!
-
TrickybffQuality PodcastHands down, this is my favorite podcast. Every episode is a treat. Tristan does such a fantastic job selecting the broad subject matter and the interviewees. The depth of detail is always perfect: deep enough to be incredibly informative and interesting, yet never so deep as to be overladen with facts. It’s spot-on!
-
BlaseRasGreat podcastLove this podcast, really enjoyed the Siren episode, another modern interpretation of sirens that differentiates them from mermaids is that Sinbad animated movie, it depicts sirens as women actually made of water, there’s a clip on youtube. It also had a cool depiction of Eris in it.
-
rafegoldbergDecent podcastGood enough content to subscribe (when they aren’t doing weird promotions for video games and Snow isn’t preening his historical plumage.) But what is truly frustrating to is to PAY for something, as I do this podcast, and STILL nonetheless have to fast forward through ads and idiotic sponsored content. That’s gonna be a one star from me, dawg. Figure out your feed.

Chris_M_SShoehorning of Politics is UnbearableHosting quacks who denying Mayan & Aztec human sacrifice. An episode on cats from a man who sounds like he’s on benzos attacking JD Vance. Ahistorical and woke, what absolute garbage.

Tori.DNew listenerI have to be honest, I started listening to fall asleep at night, but I’d start listening and I’d get really into the topic. I’ve scrolled way bask to very old episodes and love them all so much! You got yourself a new subscriber 🙌🏼💯🎉

RAKGBA deep dive into ancient historyThe Ancients covers a wide variety of topics and eras via interviews of excellent scholars who have interesting, and sometimes controversial, points of view. It's one of my go-to podcasts and I'm rarely disappointed. I just wish the tech team would stop interrupting the conversation. Ads are fine, but not in the middle of a sentence!
-
eddieG9999Excellent wide range of subjects and subject matter expertsEnjoy the wide wide range of topics and the wide range of experts speaking on them. One of the best podcasts!!! What a joy!
-
seal santaTristen! Epic Roman Victories!Keep up the great work subscribe just for this show love the longer format episodes and Greek Hellenistic Roman stuff. Army logistics and engineering are always interesting what’s the deal with that craved road into the side of a mountain by a river in Dacia? Wish the best!

Kate Miller #2A lovely reviewTristan, you always ask for a lovely review on Apple Podcasts, so I’m here to do my best. As an armchair ancient history fan, I listen often and learn a lot. Here are some of my favorite things: 1. Tristan, I love how you ask questions and then just listen. Thank you for giving guests as much time as they need to talk, even encouraging them to go deeper into detail. It’s very refreshing. 2. The guests are so knowledgeable and authoritative. Most are also sweetly passionate about their specific subject. Even if I’m not so interested in the subject, I like to listen to how enthralled they are by it. I like that positive intellectual energy. 3. The tone of the show is wonderful. There are no outsized personalities or outrage machines. Instead, there is a deep respect for the study of history, for the people who lived in ancient times, and for the listener. 4. Finally, Tristan, when you introduce every show with “I really do hope you enjoy…,” I get the impression that you really, genuinely, in-real-life hope that I enjoy!

TyAppalachiaOne big problemLove the show, but I'm absolutely burned out on Spartacus and Roman conquers etc. There is Soooo many other topics, every week I end up skipping out on listening.

tamerlanedObnoxious adsObnoxious ads. Tried this podcast before any content it was just ad after ad. Turned it off before the podcasters even started.

JarshushQuality content and presentation!!My first podcast was “S-Town” a well-done show. I am thrilled that the podcast world has matured and grown to provide programming like this show. Everything about it is excellent-from the subject matter, to the research, the guests, and the presenter. I’m enjoying the Old Testament series which provides a broad look at the biblical, archaeological, cultural, and emerging information-it’s riveting and I’m sad when an episode ends.
-
b1ubonnetNot my cup of history teaHave been a scholar of history from a young age, but just can’t connect with this presentation or style or something. I will get excited about a particular topic as I scroll episodes and inevitably switch it off within five minutes.
-
Put them lights out!Very euro centricIn general, a great show. It should have been called European Ancients. If there’s another show about Troy, Rome, or Boudica I’m ready to puke. Yes there were a few episodes on the steppe people, Neanderthals, and Bactria The scope is very limited. Weren’t there ancients in the recorded history of China, India, Africa? Plus prehistory!
-
PpfgghgInformed but PCGreat topics, informed commentary, but a very PC, anachronistic tone. Describing the average Roman as “homophobic,“ as a scholar on the most recent episode does, is to use a descriptor and category that would have baffled the ancients.
-
Farmer PirateAncient history expertsAwesome podcast featuring experts working on actual archaeological digs, DNA researchers, historians steeped in the very latest data on the chosen topic. A must listen if you want the most recent analysis on ancient historical locations. Cannot recommend enough!
-
ParaMedsThe Ancients 👍I’m not a scholar or historian. Just a nurse who is fascinated by ancient history. The Ancients is easily the best pod for all things ancient history. Tristan is a great host and the guests he interviews are top notch. Highly recommend The Ancients.
-
UBoundAmazingly well researched and presentedI love this podcast. If you love learning about ancient history, this is the best podcast around.

KanealohaSo saddened by the subscription modelI understand monetization may be necessary, however, the majority of what’s released is unavailable to me because I don’t have the funds to join. The podcast is excellent, but I am close to unsubscribing because almost every time I check to see the new episode, I can’t listen. It becomes frustrating. Other podcasts provide options. A greater percentage is available to all or after a certain period of time, episodes unlock. I hope things change.
-
Tim_MNJust came across this - fabulous! Was looking for podcasts on Ancient Britons and came across this. Lots of fascinating episodes! Is now one of my “go to” podcasts!

did ggjfiv vi kgd KB cBest Prehistoric/Historic podcastWas quickly becoming my favorite prehistory podcast, and I’ve tried all I can find, though now it’s reverted to extensively covered topics of Greece and Rome. I hope Tristan makes more of an effort to explore non European topics, and for me those are far and away the best; his episodes on the Olmec and Aboriginal Australians are superb while the mini series on Sparta and Pompeii are—in my opinion—tired. These are some episodes I’d love to hear; Monte Albán, the role and impact of pottery across the globe, the mesoamerican ball game, and other recent non sapien people like the Denisovans and hobbits of SE Asia. I hope you’ll continue to pursue subjects left out of most elementary educations, cheers! UPDATE: the episodes have become almost exclusively about Rome or Alexander the Great. The only recent episode on the Americas is behind a paywall. Going in the wrong direction, unfollowed.
-
SpaniardgipsyExcellentTristan guides us through history with uncanny enthusiasm and passion. Super interesting podcast, great selection of guest as well.
-
tee-night10s across the boardtristan’s impeccable work on this show convinced me to become a paid subscriber. i listen to a near-excessive amount of podcasts, and am *very* persnickety about what media i consume. i’ve never once been disappointed or left desiring by any episode (except for when i realized i had caught up on all the back catalog episodes!) if i may, “it just goes to show” what a fine project you’ve built in the ancients, tristan.
-
klubskaGreat podcast. 10 starsGreat knowledgeable podcast. Recommended for any amateur historian. Or good listen on the way back from work.
-
ChrisopherTGNew listenerI came here to learn more about Homo Naledi, and it is definitely a podcast I will have on regularly. I love it.
-
Can’tHearYouGood content, bad sound qualityReally enjoy this podcast for the content but some episodes are “unlistenable” due to a massive mismatch in volume between the host and the guest. I would think a show with so many episodes and listeners would do a better job in post processing. Otherwise great!
-
wdikfygkoksawyombvffI knew nothingMy understanding of Ancient History was shockingly bad until this show. Now things from Julius Caesar to homo naledi interest me.
