To The Batpoles! Batman 1966

41

Like many who grew up in the '60s and '70s (and perhaps even '80s and later), Tim and Paul had the course of their lives changed by the 1966 Batman TV show, from the types of play they did growing up to their present-day interests. In this series, they discuss the show's allure and its failures, the arc of the show from satire to sitcom, its influences (the '40s serials and the comic books themselves) and the things it, in turn, influenced.SUPPORT "To the Batpoles!" and DeconstructingComics.com via Patreon!

    Once upon a time…
…this podcast used to be fun and informative. Now, years on, they’re scraping the bottom of the barrel for discussion topics. No, actually they’re scraping the ground beneath the barrel at this point. Like Batman ‘66, all good things must come to an end and this podcast is definitely one of them.

    Great show!
Really dig this podcast. “A Joker for All Season” one of you’re best yet. The mission statement analysis on the three seasons is on point. Makes total sense.

    Thoroughly researched and fun!
As a huge fan of the 1960s series, I’ve often struggled to find good information about it. This podcast was a welcome find as the guys do a great job researching and presenting info. Keep up the great work!

    Endlessly Entertaining
I love the 1966 Batman series. A few months ago on a lark I decided to search for a Batman 66 podcast, not really expecting to find anything. To my surprise and delight I found To The Batpoles! Tim and Paul bring a thoroughly entertaining mix of nostalgic memories and scholarly discussion of individual episodes and the legacy of the show. If you are a Batman fan, grew up on the classic series, or enjoy 60s television in general you owe it to yourself to give a listen to To The Batpoles!

God Bless Tim, Paul, and Batman '66
After reading the reviews that precede mine, I don't have any new insight to offer. This podcast is extremely enjoyable and I look forward to every other Thursday when a new episode is available. Thank you Tim and Paul!

    Batbest of the Batpods
Since I've come across "To the Batpoles," my understanding of the Adam West Batman (the one true Batman) has expanded exponentially. Tim and Paul should be given extra credit since they even went to the University of Wyoming to get unpublished original Bat Scripts and share their contents with their fans. They know their stuff, and even find obscure versions of the Bat theme to share with all of us. Truly great website. Wish them the best in all bat futures. Remember when the only tv shows researched was Star Trek? --Jthree

    Holy trip down memory lane!
As a child of the 70’s, I watched Batman in reruns every day growing up. This is a great podcast for bringing back those memories. Love it!

    There’s no bat-detail too small.
I love the concept of revisiting pop culture obsessions from one’s childhood with adult eyes. Some how the hosts, Tim and Paul, do this with the rigor of scholarly researchers without ever forgetting that the subject is mostly of interest because it’s so silly and fun.

    Holy Highest rating!
Hosts Tim and Paul's obvious affection for and encyclopedic knowledge of the 1960s Batman series is the foundation for this most enjoyable podcast. If you are a fan of Adam West's classic series, this podcast is for you. They cover all the goings-on both in front of and behind the camera in an engaging and positive manner. They even make season seem better than it probably is! Highest rating!

    Bat Might...?
I hated going through the convoluted hoops of getting an iTunes account but I decided to go thru all 257 steps to leave a 5 star rating for this great podcast. Thank you Paul and Tim!

In-depth insights with a side order of fanboy
Tim and Paul not only have an excellent on-air chemistry (something you'd expect from brothers) but also are not afraid to offer fresh insights and in-depth academic analysis of the Batman 1966 series and the surrounding social and cultural implications. They also manage to keep it fun, never letting things get TOO serious. One of those rare podcasts that is accessible both to those only interested in the TV show and its production and also those that wish to look beyond for its hidden meanings and messages. Great job, guys!

    Fun and BAT-tastic!!!
I discovered this podcast a little late in the game and have been catching up on previous episodes. So much fun!! A show like Batman is kinda tricky for on it's surface it is a dopy comic book show. However, Tim and Paul peel back the layers to reveal that there is so much more going on if one pays attention. Each episode is put into historical context so some of the humor that still may have gone over my head after watching 40 plus years makes sense now. Their style is conversational and they have fun with the series without disrespecting it. I enjoy their humor and the entertainment this podcast has provided. Keep up the good work guys!!

A Must-Listen Pocast for Any Batman '66 Fan
As soon as I bought the Batman series on DVD, I searched for a podcast which discused the show and stumbled across To The Batpoles! (No relation to the online blog) As I watched the show episode by episode, then listened to the podcast episode by episode, I became hooked. I really appreciate the "research project" approach that the brothers take, mixing keen sociological analysis with a dose of music and film theory, all tinged with nostalgic memories of watching the show and being inspired by it as children. Tim & Paul do such an excellent job of researching the quirky, nonsensical bits of the show whose relevance has faded with the shift of the cultural zeitgeist since the late 1960's that they uncover easter eggs in practically every show. I look forward to each new episode, even as the brothers slog through the doldrums of the third season of the show. Keep going, guys! Keep going! If you are a Batman '66 fan, you should definitely give this a listen! Now I shall conclude this review by breaking the fourth wall and directly addressing the camera to say: On the day our dynamic podcasting duo reaches the last episode of the series, the moment we've dreaded has arrived. We will have to entertain.......... ourselves.

    I’m looking into camera...
Great podcast about an even greater show Chief. Call them the dynamic duo, caped crusaders, masked crime fighters or Tim & Paul. Whoever they are behind those microphones, we’re glad to call them our friends.

    Holy BatCast!
This is a great show for any 66 fan! I'm actually surprised they have been going so long and only have 9 ratings! Anyway, great work! Always look forward to it!

I've nothing to add to the previous reviews. They've hit on all the reasons this podcast is entertaining and insightful. The release schedule is appealing to this busy father as well. Looking forward to more.

    Bat-Insight & Bat-Details - A Great Listen!
Tim and Paul have bat-opinions! The premise of re-watching all these episodes after not seeing them for decades is interesting in and of itself, but what takes To the Batpoles! to the next level is the fact that these guys don't spend the whole episode just talking about a random Bat-story, but instead go into detail about the connections to pop culture, film noir, and a bevvy of other topics. And of course, who doesn't love each episode's CAMPING TRIP?? This podcast is great fun, the episodes are easy to digest (great for someone like me, who is currently binging the back catalog), and you'd do well to check it out. Keep up the great work, guys!

    Absolutely exhaustive!
To The Batpoles has to be the singular most intelligent podcast about one of the silliest, most misunderstood, yet perhaps influential pop artifacts of the phenomenon stuffed 1960s: the Batman TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward. Both the Young brothers, Tim and Paul, bring a wealth of knowledge to this unlikely subject, all within the context of their shared memories as kids enjoying mid-70s after school reruns of the colorful program on a black and white TV. This isn't a show about Bat-trivia or simple commentary on each episode, but rather an engaging mix of university level cinema study, socialogical commentary, story analysis (both brothers are English majors), 20th century history and pop culture reverence. Unique among podcasts of it's kind, To The Batpoles will occasionally take one of its typically hour plus discussions to do a more in-depth study on a particular aspect of Batman: its camp aesthetic, the show's use of music, its relation to the Pop Art scene of its time, or the biographical background of its star Adam West. To The Batpoles is a fun, smart and, in the context of two brothers sharing memories, warm podcast.

    A Series Detailed/The Brothers Prevail
If you're looking for fun, smart, detailed analysis of the Adam West "Batman" TV series, look no further. Tim and Paul offer in-depth takes on everything from the plots to the most minor of guest actors, recurring cultural and social themes of the show, musical critques and much, much more. They pick up on (and often run with!) things even the most hardcore fans of the series may not have noticed before. An enjoyable- and very thorough- tour through Gotham City, 1966.

    Fun and Smart
The Young brothers know their stuff, both in terms of the Batman 66 show, and in terms of media analysis. Their love for the underlying material shines through, but that does not mean they don't point out problems when they occur. It is a great mix of nostalgia, analysis, and fun. Highly recommended.

    Exceptional fun!
A terrific podcast about the 1966 BATMAN tv series that brings review, film analysis and sociological impact to episode by episode musings without ever losing the feeling of two brothers with towels tied around their necks, running through the back yard. Unmissable Ken Holtzhouser

    Holy analysis!
These guys do a good job. Who knew that the Batman TV show was such a wellspring of insight into Hollywood trivia, sixties counterculture, sexual mores, and even musical analysis? They do their homework, plumbing the comic book source material and providing audio excerpts from the episodes as well as tangentially related archival footage. Worth a listen. Looking forward to future installments.
