Into the Megadungeon

Games #39

This podcast is about the tools and techniques GMs use to create and run megadungeons, entire tabletop roleplaying game campaigns where the adventuring takes place in a single giant dungeon with 100’s of rooms spread out over many levels. Why run a megadungeon campaign? How can you build a single adventure location so that it sustains excitement over more than 100 sessions? To answer these questions and many more, Ben talks to the people who know best: GMs with years of experience running amazing megadungeon campaigns.

    Great Interviews to Share Context
As a kid, dungeons never quite did it for me. Years later, I realized we’re playing them wrong. The feature of the dungeon is clear delineation of rooms/locations; and the presence of factions makes all of the difference. In both the “Mysteries” and “Little Persistent Worlds” episodes, the interviewees share the emergence of a dynamic world, driven in part by player curiosity. They highlight that the focal point is not the characters but the campaign; the interplay of factions and characters and the consequences of their interactions. For anyone curious about the allure of dungeons (and mega-dungeons), this is a must have entry into the gaming curriculum.

The podcast I’ve been waiting for my whole life
What can I say? This is exactly the kind of thing I want to listen to every day: people talking about dungeons and megadungeons specifically. Couldn’t have started out with a better guest: James Maliszewski, the elder statesman of the OSR and just a phenomenal guy all around. Love everything about this show, you could go for an hour or more and I would eat every bit of it up. Here’s to a hopefully very long run!
