The Stories We Tell with Joanna Gaines

Books #150

New York Times Bestselling author Joanna Gaines invites guests - including podcast-reluctant Chip Gaines - to discuss her new book, The Stories We Tell.Filled with the same wit and hard-won wisdom you expect from the stars of Fixer Upper and Magnolia founders, this four-episode series shines a light on the vulnerable side of Jo as she speaks candidly about doubt and belief, shame and acceptance, and finding strength in self-discovery.Jo writes, “Earlier this year, I wrote down my story—all the people and places and moments from my life that shaped me. Some of it broke my heart, and some of it pieced it back together. But all of it made me surer than ever that the stories we tell—to ourselves and to each other—can heal, they can help us grow, and make us think. But mostly, stories are how we connect. That’s what led me to this podcast, to a place where we can share our stories together.”The series will feature solo conversations between Chip and Jo, along with other special guests, plus stories from others mixed in along the way. There is hope and power in living out the fullness of your story. But you don’t have to write it alone. Please direct business inquiries to: blindnilaudio@magnolia.com Website: https://www.blindnilmedia.com/audio

    Love the raw and realness!
Definitely loved every episode and the openness everyone shared. You realize everyone does truly have a story and if you just stop and listen to each person you can learn so much in life.

    Joanna Gaines
I am enjoying this, except for Chip interrupts way too much.

    Love the sister story
It is so awesome to hear the stories from Jo’s sisters. I really appreciate the honesty that they each expressed in their relationships with their mom and with each other

    Just Beautiful….
Beautiful, raw vulnerability, honest and above all beautiful….I have always loved Joanna Gaines beautiful work before even knowing who she was. After watching her over the years and always drawn to her beautiful talents and work after listening to this Podcast it just makes sense of everything she creates. This Podcast is real..I wanted more after each podcast. I just finished listening to the one with her Mother which is as so beautifully honest. It made me miss my Mother so badly but in a beautiful way..I can’t wait to get her book after listening to this. Just beautiful…like Joanna inside and out♥️

Jo didn’t need Chip for this one
Jo and Chip are such a good pair on Fixer Upper, but he is such a distraction on this podcast. Not only does he interrupt - he’s dismissive and comes off as incredibly shallow. He seems unempathetic to Jo’s story and seems unable to understand what she is trying to convey. I LOVE THE BOOK and have purchased it as gifts for others. I love Jo’s voice and story and approach - we just need more of that in the podcast and less of Chip.

    Lovely
Such honest vulnerability. Those of us from mixed families bore witness to our mothers struggle within American culture as 1st generation minorities - juxtaposed today by our daughters highlighting their proud roots. Somehow as the gatekeepers we’ve shouldered a strange mommy in the middle pain. This was such a beautiful lens into the full circle of the private stories we haven’t always told. Thank you Joanna and family.

    Such a relatable story
Loved the episode w her sisters. I always wondered what it must’ve been like for her and her family growing up somewhere so white. It’s a relatable story to my own and it made me tear up. Their resilience and love for each other is so beautiful.

    So relatable! Love this podcast!
I have followed Chip & Joanna since Fixer Upper first started. They are so real and relatable. I’ve read the Magnolia Story & listened to it on audio which I highly recommend because it’s narrated by Chip & Jo. This podcast is so relatable & inspiring. We bury so much and it’s so freeing to hear someone talk about similar experiences and you say ‘me too’!!! I loved hearing Jo’s mom’s story. I can’t wait for more podcasts! I have t bought the new book yet, but I will! The podcasts with Chip crack me up. I love how he encourages Joanna and makes her laugh. You two would be fun to sit & chat with!

    Love Chip but No
Chip seems uncomfortable and Joanne seems more comfortable chatting with others. Y’all have a massive worldwide arena where the two of you conquer best together but this little arena isn’t it and that’s totally ok. I couldn’t podcast with my hubs even though we have insanely in-depth, explorative and enlightening conversations between just the two of us and sometimes friends. I’m so glad you’re doing this Jo! Your voice is soothing, real, compassionate and relatable. More, more, more!

    Honest, vulnerable and beautiful.
Truly enjoyed the stories told and the honor, value and space given to each person sharing. What a beautiful and honest peek into the victories and valleys, family, and individual insight to that which has shaped the stories told. Especially loved Jo's mama's story.

    What a beautiful family!
I was mesmerized by the love in your family, I cried and I felt every thing you, your sisters, your husband and your mother said. Never is too late to amend things. I was waiting for more episodes😀

    Military brat love !
I love that this is out in the universe to see our point of view as Korean Americans the struggle for identity is real ! My mom was a tiger mom and I have tough skin because of it my my dad was Air Force he used to be the chief of mental health he basically was like mr. Rogers and my mom was a spitfire . She can never curse correctly if I would get in trouble I would talk like her with her accent and make her laugh so I wouldn’t get a spanking and it worked . I was opposite as far as kids teasing me for being Asian I would pretend I knew karate and they would say don’t mess with her it’s in her DNA 😳 I would play on that and loved that I could act like I knew . I need to do stand up with all my crazy stories one day I will . You inspire me and I’m glad we have representation!! Bonus of being have Korean I’m gunna be 49 and no one can believe it the good genes no wrinkles !!

    Thankful for your example
Incredible podcast. Coming out of a tough couple years, I didn’t realize I wanted to shrink and disappear so much until listening to your podcast gave me a 3D perspective of all the stories we tell. Your stories, your mom, your sister- so incredibly beautiful. Such a masterpiece I see in your stories & healing. Thank you for the reminder to continue in curiosity, wonder, freedom, in the moment- living. Looking forward to hearing more episodes. Thank you for giving us all space to grow in this spot.

I have always loved your families journey & story! Have followed most of your adventure since Fixer Upper! Getting to hear even more about it a diving in deeper into what makes your little family so great is a fun adventure to go on, makes me feel like I really know you all! Love the humor and love you all share with one another! Your sweet little momma, is so precious! But I love that she is also a little firecracker! She’s my favorite! Beautiful stories we can all relate with
These are such beautiful stories that everyone can relate with. Whether you have Korean ancestry or not, we all have stories that we can relate to like these. I’m Mexican American, and I can relate to the stories of feeling out of place in the US just like the stories being shared in this podcast. Thank you for sharing these stories.

    Why only 3 stars?
This was well done. I appreciate Joannas willingness to open up. Very authentic. As much as I appreciate Chip, he interrupted Jo constantly and a few times even said things that could be perceived as undermining her or seeking to overshadow her. Please address this issue as it will make it difficult to continue listening to this podcast if this is what the dynamic is like. And I WANT to listen to this podcast. 😊
  • Proud to be Asian
    Beautiful to listen to
I so relate to the experiences you went through. My mother was from Korea and my parents met during the Korean War. I always thought our childhood was normal until school started and then the differences were obvious. I’m also the perfectionist and always knew it was my mother who instilled this in me. What I’ve learned over the years through prayer is that I have always been enough and to have grace and compassion for others.

    Wow!
Whether you are biracial or bicultural or just don’t always fit in, this podcast speaks to you.The conversation with your mommy is a conversation I could have had with mine who married out of her own village. Thank you🥰

This book matters and I can’t wait to read it.
As I listened to the first two episodes, I couldn’t believe there is someone else in the world so like me. From the voices which tell me the negative …to the journaling process …to the weight of the world on my shoulders because I “feel” this level of responsibility as an entrepreneur… to how much I want to go through this process to find the point in time when my little person self went from living out loud to living in my head. Who and what squashed the thing that makes me feel light and free? I am so grateful for the language you’ve given me to investigate what has been stirring in my heart. Just yesterday I wrote this in my journal (before I ever listened to these podcasts) “He will make the plan happen in full color and clarity and majesty.” And then you said “ you woke up and see life in full color.” I jumped into my journal to find the passage because I knew God used the world color in my journaling. For a few months, I have had the word “unveil” floating around in my head and felt it would be my 2023 word. But that was my “pre-word” because I am certain now that my 2023 word will be more like a phrase and will have “color” in it. Thank you for your obedience in writing the book and making the podcast. It made a difference for me and I feel certain it will for others like me who have this overwhelming sense of responsibility which takes full priority over “fun”. God Bless You and your family.

    Incredible
I have watched Joanna for years and I am loving this podcast!!! I love reading about and listening to strong women so this is resonating with me as a woman in my 50s who is at the age of thinking about my story and struggles that are still ongoing this is truly needed. I also love the message of Joanna’s mom about just trusting God in her story. Thank you for this podcast and to Joanna for writing her book. 💖

    The stories we tell
Amazing!!! I’m an artist and listen to podcasts while I paint. I binged every episode today! Now I want to read the book!!! Thank You for being so vulnerable and sharing such heart warming stories.

    Turning points
I loved hearing these stories! Especially Mama’s story! Being the youngest of 3 sisters, it was really easy to relate to all being different and responding to parents differently, but loving each other. I feel like there is a faith story with everyone here too and would LOVE to hear those!

    Reflective and resonating
My sister shared this podcast with me and I was blown away by the first episode. The second one left me in my feelings. Stories of the Asian American experience are just recently becoming more prevelant. It started for me with David Chang’s Netflix show Ugly Delicious where he speaks about the food from his childhood that he was so embarrassed about as a kid. Listening to Joanna and her family speak pulled at my heartstrings, especially with her sisters. Their experiences were so different from each other’s and it led me to navigate the waters of my own experience. It’s so funny how we are just unpacking things as we get older. I’m a first generation Vietnamese American, one of three sisters, and we too are thinking about how we grew up and really finally standing in our Asian heritage and culture. I can remember just wanting to fit in as a kid, being self deprecating to beat kids to the punch. Although I had a rough childhood, I enjoy seeing my kids take such pride in being Asian. Loving the food, the people, and the culture. I just bought the book and can’t wait to dive in. It feels so good to feel seen and to feel community in this special club, one that my kids’ generation doesn’t understand. Thank you for sharing Joana and family.

Chip needs to learn how to TRULY listen
Loved the recent episode with Mama. But listening to this first episode has been very triggering for me (as someone who often feels unheard in my own partnership). Chip is not only interrupting Jo, but also finishing her sentences… and instead of letting her express her experience the way she perceives it, he is influencing everything she says. At times he is even dismissive. Chip will never be able to understand the experience of growing up biracial in America. So let her share how she felt and tell her story instead of saying “why didn’t you perceive being different as an advantage?” 🙄 I think her experience is totally valid and his whole attitude invalidates her in every exchange. I felt smothered listening to him, he is not accustomed to being in the passenger seat.

    Beautiful and inspiring!
Thank you, Joanna, for this podcast. Your story and these stories of those who have made your life are so inspirational to me and have helped me realize how beautiful my own life is, too! I used to focus on the challenges and sometimes wonder if I made the right choices.I see now this is the road that is my beautiful life. Thank you for this gift of beautiful stories.

    Most awesome podcast
I love everything about this podcast!! Joanna Gaines is the real deal!! I’ve listened to every episode twice. Cried and laughed as I’ve thought about my own story and how I would write it. Thank you Joanna for being so honest and so brave to share your story with us and your family members as well, especially your sweet Mama❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏

    Mamas story
I love hearing her tell her story. She is so sweet always calling herself mommie or mamma while she tells her story. I love seeing her on your shows. She really is a beautiful lady. So sad that her upbringing was so hard for her but look how she blossomed into such a lovely lady who clearly loves her family! Such a special story. You can really hear the love in Jos voice while speaking to her. Very sweet! Thanks for sharing your mom with us!

    Love this podcast!
I have really enjoyed understanding what it means to tell your story. To combat the lies we are told or tell ourselves as we grow and age is a difficult and beautiful journey. Thank you for encouraging so many to find who they were created to be and how to choose to be proud of who that is and what the journey of life looks like. God Bless!
  • Jrob86
    Love everything about these two!
I absolutely love everything about these two! I’m an avid podcast listener and I was just thinking how great it would be if they had a podcast! They are so inspirational and this podcast takes a deeper dive into who they are.

    “Land on grace and gratitude”
That’s what Chip and Jojo do as a lifestyle. As Joanna says in the book, “Land on grace and gratitude.” It’s beautiful. The new book and this podcast is so encouraging and I almost feel as though I’m in their living room just listening to all the revelations they are receiving and reciprocating with one another. I’ve been listening to the book on Audible and it’s also on Apple Books. I also am reading the book for the 2nd time. Beautiful. Inspiring and Inward reflection to really see my life with grateful to heart to God.
