It’s All Your Fault: High Conflict People

48

Hosted by Bill Eddy, LCSW, Esq. and Megan Hunter, MBA, It’s All Your Fault! High Conflict People explores the five types of people who can ruin your life—people with high conflict personalities and how they weave themselves into our lives in romance, at work, next door, at school, places of worship, and just about everywhere, causing chaos, exhaustion, and dread for everyone else. They are the most difficult of difficult people — some would say they’re toxic. Without them, tv shows, movies, and the news would be boring, but who wants to live that way in your own life!Have you ever wanted to know what drives them to act this way? In the It’s All Your Fault podcast, we’ll take you behind the scenes to understand what’s happening in the brain and illuminates why we pick HCPs as life partners, why we hire them, and how we can handle interactions and relationships with them. We break down everything you ever wanted to know about people with the 5 high conflict personality types: narcissistic, borderline, histrionic, antisocial/sociopath, and paranoid. And we’ll give you tips on how to spot them and how to deal with them.

Why would you have an episode with a person who has been listed as a suspect in numerous domestic violence reports, kicked out of his specialized unit for misappropriating resources to violate people’s rights, and then fired from his police department for assisting a domestic violence suspect continue to terrorize his victim?

As a person with difficult personalities in my life, this podcast has been very helpful on how to deal with them. Also it helps to know that it’s not your fault and not feel guilty when there are conflicts.

    Life changing!
As a daughter of an HCP father (with likely other undiagnosed personality disorders), I never could never quite describe his behaviors to others. As soon as I listened to the first episode, I knew that I finally had a name for his behavior. He has caused and continues to cause much chaos in our family, even at 78 years old. My poor mother should have divorced him years ago but hoped that things would get better. I have tried the BIFF responses and they do seem to be helpful some of the time. Unfortunately these types of people are unable or unwilling to change so managing the behavior is the best that I can do. I truly enjoy the episodes as I feel now like I'm not the only one out there experiencing these issues. Thanks Bill and Megan!

Not a great fit for some trauma survivors
As someone with an extremely abusive relative that was actually professionally diagnosed with NPD, HPD, and BPD, I have mixed feelings about this podcast. Yes, there is a lot of great information, which is helpful for context, but the overly sympathetic undercurrent that favors high-conflict people and the constant drumming that they should be showered with empathy and constantly accommodated is off putting. There is a pronounced lack of compassion from the hosts for people who have gone low or no contact with abusive high-conflict people to protect themselves and their own families. For this reason, it's really not suitable, in my personal opinion, for those who are early in their recovery process or are actively struggling with people attacking them on behalf of the high conflict person. Probably better for those who must manage high-conflict people in a professional capacity where they can find ways to detach or for trauma survivors who are at a more advanced stage of their recovery.

    Great Show
The insights about borderlines are great. I find it helpful. I have a relative that has a trail of destruction behind them. I knew this person was bad news all of my life. This same person is now an ongoing problem for me after a car accident that killed the most important person in my life. I am grappling with this huge lost in addition with destructive person. This person would only show up when they wanted something. Now there is a lot of money riding on the type of relationship me and two others had with the deceased. I feel I’ll be the target of blame. I can’t help it if they only came around once a year for one and once a day or two every few years. What should I do?

    Valuable professionally and personally
This podcast is incredibly helpful for therapists, attorneys, parents, and anyone who operates in a system where they are interacting regularly with high conflict people. I only wish Bill could have someone coach him on talking on a podcast— it’s almost unbearable to listen to his frequent and very loud gasps, swallows, lip smacks, etc. which is too bad because what he says is fantastic!

    Very hopeful
The podcast gives me great hope not only about being able to improve my behaviour but that the numerous people suffering in prisons all over the world now have a way forward to vastly improve their life and the lives of those around them irrespective of whether they ever leave prison. In one word = incredible.

    Creepy undertones
Vague language and finger pointing to the ever present “them” has very ominous modern day eugenics vibes.
