The Brothers Zahl

66

Welcome to The Brothers Zahl podcast, a collaboration between John, David and Simeon Zahl, three siblings engaged in "the God business"--one as a writer, one as a professor, one as a priest. Each episode is devoted to a single topic of spiritual or religious interest in the hopes of sketching an overarching picture of grace and everyday life. The music is pretty good, too. Brought to you by Mockingbird Ministries.

    Fantastic listen
Every episode is full of erudite, scripture-based wisdom delivered in a manner everyone can understand. These guys are seriously smart but also gentle, funny, self-deprecating and grounded. I love the art and pop culture recommendations at the end of every episode.

    Great Listen
Favorite episodes: Salvation, Creativity and the Christmas episode. Truthfully they are all worth a few listens and I can’t wait for more episodes.

    Invaluable
The Faith episode and the Holy Spirit episode have spiritually stirred something in me that I’d written off as dead. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for making and sharing this podcast. You’ve given me hope after a few really tough years!

    Just like cousin Eddie says...
It's the gift that keeps on giving the whole year (sips eggnog from moose mug). Having known these fellas and their families and ministries for a number of years, you'd expect a topical "Christian podcast" to be just a bit more of the same old story. BUT GOD (HT TD Jakes/ Bible ) has a different plan for your ears. I somehow find each episode to be refreshing, engaging and speaking a new (and persuasive?) word to my heart! It really is as good as the Jello of the month club.

You Zahl brothers are to the Christian faith what the Manning bros are to football. Excellent podcast. Deep yet humorous, casual yet profound, substantial & inspirational. Peace. -Celia P

    3 Brothers All about Jesus
I too am one of three brothers and love the heartfelt, shared compelling conversations about grace and the Gospel. I come from a much more theologically conservative and narrow tradition, but find the way these 3 guys talk about the Holy Spirit and the Cross so richly moving. Keep up the good work and thank you, Simeon, for your quiet thoughtful reflections! I too was the 3 brother needing to learn not to speak first at the dinner table. Life really is All about Jesus and all about Grace. Thank you for testifying to that.
  • Fan of mbird!
    Superb
I love this podcast. It’s intelligent and accessible, so much depth yet peppered with levity and humor. A lot to learn about the dynamics of grace in everyday life from the Zahls. Their zeal for the topic is infectious and compelling.

    Just awesome
I love this podcast. It’s funny, intellectual, personal, honest and so much more. It’s made me think, hope, and laugh as I’ve listened. What a gift to hear these brothers reflect on the Good News together.

    Hooray for more!
This 2nd season is terrific! Each episode is as relevant and compelling as the next. I found myself pleasantly surprised and satisfied by the nuances you address on the topics. The mutual admiration and respect you convey is appealing. And the vulnerability expressed is refreshing. More! More!

    Intelligent, sincere, and informative.
I always find myself going back to the Zahl’s - all 4 of them, for Hope, guidance and sense. I’ve been listening and reading Zahl stuff for years, and it’s comforting to know that we are growing old together. This podcast is a must listen to for anyone who wants genuine and intelligent perspective on Grace and Christian spiritual living.

This is such a great podcast
This podcast tackles big Christian topics. It is accessible, intelligent, and filled with a lot of humanity. Run don’t walk.

    Thanks Dave, Simeon, and John!
I love the Zahls. They’re so insightful, funny, brainy, and pastoral. I listened to season 1 multiple times throughout the last year, and just got through my first run of season 2, my initial favorite episodes probably being “creativity” and “aging” (with special guest patriarch, Paul Zahl). Highly recommended.
  • susie bruce springsteen
Yay for season 2! Insightful, funny, and an absolute joy to listen to
Great integration of studied theology, cultural references, and one’s everyday lived experience. The message of God’s Grace in one I need to hear daily, and mockingbird never fails to deliver… thank you.. i appreciate all three brothers (especially Simeon :)

Worth listening to over and over and over
Beautiful, brilliant, profound discussion on grace that feels just like the pure drink of water they reference. May there be many more!

    Stoked
All I want to say is please keep this going! For me, this is the most encouraging and helpful thing to come out of Mockingbird Ministries. The only beef I’ve got with these guys is they’ve yet to tell me what songs I’ve been knee-dancing to between their words of grace

    Zahl Family Gift
When my kids interrupt me while I’m listening to most podcasts, I get short with them quite easily. When listening to The Brothers Zahl, I find it easier to turn it off and be present with them. The content, but more importantly, the way there’s brothers talk about the content, brings a peculiar peace to my soul. The Zahl family is a true gift, thanks for sharing it guys.

    The Uncle
Sorry guys I just learned how to review. Much to say about all but God, Church and Grace I will listen to repeatedly for years. This podcast is everything as billed. Informative, spiritual, intellectual, entertaining, educational and inspiring from 3 guys I know and love. One specific comment or memory that only something these guys have produced could evoke. Church, goofy boys, an amazing, holy, practical Mother and Lifesavers, all interrelated with real depth, certainly for me. When I had the privilege of spending a few moments in the very special and beautiful Women’s Church of Magdala, the first spiritual, truly holy woman in my life that came to mind was my GrandmaBrown (their maternal great grandmother) who (besides being the greatest cook ever) took me not infrequently as a child on a 1 block stroll to the neighborhood Gem Supermarket and bought Lifesavers for me which was such a memorable treat. In the quiet of that most holy place, a church, my amazing grandmother, spiritually and Lifesavers were brought together in a familiar and almost mystical way. Can’t wait for season # 2. UB

Will make you laugh and cry and laugh again
I binged the entire first season of The Brothers Zahl podcast while driving through old Florida to/from a strawberry farm. I learned something new in every episode and really found the podcasts to just get better and better. “Church” and “Grace” were thought-provoking - truly fascinating - but “Abreaction” took the cake for me. I’ve listened to many sermons given by their father so it’s extra special to hear how his sons related to growing up with his teachings and thus have a deeper understanding than most on abreaction. There’s a lot to learn from the experiences of John, Dave, and Simeon. The recommendations at the end are great, John’s stories are the best, Simeon’s humanity is refreshing, and Dave keeps it real with the cultural references.

    Second Time Around
I’m getting ready to listen to these podcasts for the second time because they were so good. I think I need a second listen to get all the details. The wisdom here is deep enough but clear enough to need a thorough delve.
  • Rwalkruns
Thoughtful *and* grace-filled? In this economy?
I’ve loved every episode of this podcast so far, but “Church” stopped me in my tracks. I’m constantly pondering my own relationship to the church, and I found myself intrigued and deeply encouraged by what the Zahls shared from their own experiences, beliefs, and observations. The gospel of grace is everything.

    Best non-preachy religious Podcast
This podcast is fantastic, fun, engaging, super entertaining, and enlightening! I listened to the first season in a couple days cause I couldn’t get enough. Can’t wait for more! For those interested in GRACE, the spiritual perspectives borne out of Protestantism, the basics of Christian theology when divided between Law and Gospel, religion in general, spiritual values, Love, humor, Freedom in Christ, culture, books, music and film, the broken and contrite personal spirit bathed in the mercy of God’s healing love, etc... all in discussion by 3 witty and sincere brothers (with impressive credentials)... this podcast is a bastion of faithful and sincere witness to the true good, the true God of Peace ... full of confident yet humble musings with an open heart to the Spirit and an open mind to the Mystery of it All. Bless you up and go listen!!!

    Come and hear!
I’ve been listening to various religious and particularly Christian podcasts for years. I’m also a pastor who finished seminary just a year ago. The brother’s Zahl gift is all with fresh perspective of faith, invite us all deeper into honest conversation about life, and offer the invitation to engage in spreading the gospel. Uniquely in invitational and declarative ways that encourage the listener. Share with all your friends - come and hear the good news 💖

Worth listening to more than once
The Brothers Zahl gave me much to ponder. Their obvious affection for each other adds another layer of enjoyment. Some of their ideas are so big that I will listen again to pick up what I missed. Hoping for future episodes.

    Rest & Request for Race
Bright and refreshing to my ears and soul. Coming from a theology of glory training /background and a vary law driven Polynesian culture (yet very dualistic b/c it’s such Island living), this brings such a thought provoking balm. Where I am now I’m bombarded with so much performism, within and around in the Los Angeles area. And I’m thankful for the resources I DO have but wish I was in a gospel community where I don’t feel like I need to climb a latter. Thank you all for this. Gives me grace to go to Christ and rest there with Him. Also, wondering if y’all can you podcast about “race” (ethnicity), racism or diversity from a gospel perspective, or assimilation, denying ones culture yet appreciating cross culture and beauty in others color of skin, regardless. I have a heart for low income communities and generally a lot of Grace communities are no where near low income/POC communities. So much there I know but would love to hear yalls thoughts about “the nations”. Most resources are either very “liberal” or very “conservative” then I find myself thrown on this latter that I don’t want to be on, in me or I’m those relationships.

  • Battle Bears - 1
    Humorous, insightful, encouraging
The Brother’s Zahl is a great pod. They are three brothers working in different Christian fields. This lends to three different and encouraging perspectives. Though I’m off a different “tribe” and disagree at times, I still find their reflections and insights encouraging in and enlightening. I left each episode with at least one different way of thinking about life and God. I left most episodes laughing hard. As a dad of two boys who didn’t have a good upbringing I was encouraged that it is possible to have a healthy upbringing, though I know no house is perfect. If you want more grace in your life, you will be encouraged but this podcast! -Josh Brown

    My New Favorite Podcast
I’m very selective with my Christian content. After leaving vocational ministry 5 years ago I’ve largely considered myself to be “barely Christian” - or just hanging on to the thread of Jesus’ robe. In this period I’ve had several things come my way that have reassured me that God isn’t done with me and is still drawing near. David Zahl’s book “Seculosity” was one such source and now this podcast may be the most profound example yet. I feel so loved and ministered to by God through this podcast.

    What a treat!
It’s so great to hear these three brothers talk so engagingly and intelligently about such difficult but supremely important topics. It’s amazing how well their different perspectives complement each other — you have the pastor/pastoral care/preacher perspective, the culture critic/writer perspective, and the theologian/academic perspective, but they all mesh so well. And they all have their unique quirks and interests. It must be nice to have such great friends and intellectual comrades as brothers! I sure hope they do another season someday...

    Intelligent and Compelling
This podcast is intelligent, thought-provoking, compelling, interesting, and relevant. If you’re a new Christian, a life-long Christian, someone who has left the faith, or someone who was never drawn to the faith, there is something here for you. These three brothers discuss important topics in ways that will have you yearning for and noticing more grace in your life. And you’ll find that grace right here in words and in the Word.

    Delightful and highly humane
Excellent discussions on issues of central importance to Christianity, but in a way that is life giving and stimulating.
