Fun & Insightful look into what forms your fears
Many years ago I wrote a book called The Anatomy of Fear, exploring the psychological underpinnings behind horror and science fiction films. I’m fascinated by what forms our fears and how that affects our choices in entertainment and life. This show is an approachable, fun, and illuminating peek into that same world. Terry and Mary Beth are vibrant hosts taking us on a tour of traumatic childhoods one film at a time. Totally worth the journey every single episode.

Scarred for Life never fails to remind me of many a childhood movie that terrified me, and lets me know that I’m not alone thanks to all of the crazy awesome guests that talk about that one movie that messed them up. Hosts, Mary Beth and Terry, create an environment with each guest that makes you feel like you’re listening to a group of friends just hanging out and talking kindertrauma. Lots of laughs, lots of heart, and lots of cinematic knowledge are always on the menu. Also, spiders for Terry.

    SPIDERS FOR TERRY
I love this podcast. I’m always learning about some weird new movie to check out and it feels like hanging out with your horror nerd besties. But most importantly - Terry needs to watch INFESTED. 🕷️ (I actually cant believe I haven’t left a rating for this show yet !)

    Amazing Horror Podcast!
This is my favorite horror podcast! The hosts are interesting, knowledgeable, funny, and have great chemistry. I feel like I’m chatting with friends when I listen. The guests they have on are always great as well. I’ve learned about so many movies to watch (new and old) through this, it’s a great resource for horror movie fiends like me. I greatly appreciate the diverse thoughts and opinions presented here. Keep it up Mary Beth and Terry!

    A Conversation With Friends
Honestly, there are so many podcasts these days it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But listening to Terry and Mary Beth each week doesn’t feel like I’m listening to a podcast. It feels like I’m in a conversation with my friends. I love how welcoming they are with their guests. They always seem to make them feel comfortable and that opens up and leads to some really great conversations. This podcast is a true delight. I look forward to each new episode. Best, ASB

    My favorite podcast
Terry and Mary Beth are two of my favorite people on the planet. They're some of the kindest, most hard-working people I know and thefact that they have a podcast together makes me smile at least once a day. The chemistry between them is delightful and I could listen to them talk about literally anything for hours on end. The guests they get are great(Justin Nordell's episode is my comfort podcast), they're HILARIOUS, and I hope the podcast never ends, at least not before I get to be on ;P. Now I know MB is supposed to give a found footage recommendation for every review but I was hoping she could talk about Savageland? I feel it is highly underseen and incredibly scary. I feel it pairs well with Lake Mungo(absolutely haunting images) and The Bay(the event happens to a whole town). Thanks and I love you guys Tony

    So much fun!
Out of all the film podcasts I enjoy this one best. Mary Beth and Terry are fun to listen to. I often find myself laughing along or yelling out an agreement while listening 😂 Great guests too! I love when they talk about a movie I haven’t seen and then I immediately add it to my watch list. Listening to them is like listening to friends. I wish I had more horror movie friends I could geek out with like this IRL.

The conversation and the guests are always fascinating - I’ve found some of my favorite critics and creatives through this show. My only regret is that I didn’t board the train before 2021.

    The Movies That Define Us
I absolutely love this concept! Mary Beth and Terry are terrific hosts, and both bring tremendous perspectives on film, and how film can impact our lives, both in our youth and as adults. For the most part I didn’t give found footage the attention it deserved, but Mary Beth changed that for me— thanks! Also, Terry has a delightful laugh :)

    Essential listening for horror kids
After following them on Twitter for a long time, I finally started listening to this show maybe three weeks ago, and I’ve already consumed like 10 episodes. Every installment makes me want to stop what I’m doing and immediately re-watch the film being discussed. As hosts, Mary Beth and Terry are naturally funny and deeply insightful. And their eclectic guests bring such distinguishable films to dissect. This podcast has permanently changed the way I see some movies. (P.S. to M.B.—I’m in the Baltimore-Annapolis area!)

    Interesting, In-Depth, Personal and Fun
Very fun, Mary Beth and Terry are great hosts and the guests they get are fantastic. They’re both very knowledgeable about the genre and have a lot of love for horror! I love hearing about how horror professionals got into the genre, and the movies that really got to them when they were young. There are sometimes spoilers for new films when they have directors on so watch out if you’re worried about that!

    Awesome Show!!!
I love listening to fascinating guests share what terrified them as children and remembering how they terrified me too. Terry and Mary Beth are smart and hilarious and always have the best film recommendations.

    Spooky since forever!
Mary Beth & Terry have always been 2 of my favorite people in the horror community and their combined dopeness makes for one fantastic podcast; these 2 are an absolute hoot together! I love the balance between background info on the movie, personal insight, and interviews with guests about what experiences primed their love of horror (usually resulting in hilarious and/or wholesome stories). My favorite episodes (so far) would be The Shining ep with Gregg Mucci or Hellraiser with Tales From the Stitch, highly recommend!

    Delightful Trip Through Our Traumas
With a brilliant conceit- the exploration of the films that shook us as kids -Scarred For Life is an insightful and fun foray into how pop culture shapes us. With warm, affable, and sensational hosts, as well as truly engaging guests, this podcast is a great tour of cinema in a much more personal way. Recommended!

    Fantastic
A great show that is laidback and fun but also enjoyable to new horror fans and old. I also appreciate them remembering back to when they first saw the movie playing off their nostalgia while doing that myself with my own memories of the topic at hand. I’m rambling but long story short give this a shot, it’s got good people at the helm and it’s high quality too.

    A fantastic listen!
A friend recommended this podcast to me a couple weeks ago and I have been binging it ever since. I love the concept of discussing movies that scared us as children (being a child of the 80s, I know this feeling well!), and Mary Beth and Terry are so fun to listen to. I am also a giant horror buff, so I love hearing their recommendations. Also, through their guests, I’ve been introduced to many more writers, podcasters, etc. who are part of this wonderful horror community. Highly recommended!

    Love Every Minute
Terry & Mary Beth do an outstanding job bringing their guest and listeners on a fun and interesting journey through the week’s dive into a film/series/event in horror. They’re able to dig in deep but make everything feel accessible and relatable. As a horror fan for most of my life, it’s wonderful to connect with this show, it’s hosts, and guests on topics I know and love.

    Perfect Concept. Better execution.
Just the concept of the podcast is amazing. We all have that gateway movie that terrified us so much that we needed more horror. This podcast dives into that and also just has fun and knowledge from Mary Beth and Terry. I’m bingeing through it right now and loving every minute. Can not recommend this enough.

    Wonderful
I’m not at all a podcast person, but I’m starting to slowly branch out. This is a wonderful listen with tons of heart. The passion and love for movies is so evident from both of the hosts, and their laughter in every episode makes me feel lighter every time I hear it. I’m so excited to hear more in the future!

A fun podcast that's easy to relate to
Everyone remembers the first movie that scarred them which makes this is such a relatable podcast that is easy to connect with. The third episode was centered around Jaws, which also happens to be the film that first scared me. While I didn't have the exact same reactions, many were similar. I mean who didn't have irrational fears of sharks after their first watch? They also do a little deeper analysis, break down the specific scenes that they each found the scariest, and bring some additional context from the production side of things. I love the enthusiasm that everyone brings to the table, from the hosts to the guests. It's also fun hearing them talk about recent films they've seen and upcoming releases they're excited about.

    Super fun podcast
Really enjoy the insightful hosts. The topic has universal appeal, as we all had that piece of entertainment that scared us as a kid.

More than just a good premise
While the idea of talking about the movies that really made a impact on you early on is great. The chemistry between the hosts Terry and Mary Beth make you want to listen beyond just the premise. Looking forward to seeing it develop more as it goes on.

For horror fans by horror fans
This is such a great angle to talk about horror movies - what affected you at an early age? This isn't some best of, or random news podcast, but one that connects the guests with something meaningful in their lives. Co-hosts Terry and Mary Beth are so knowledgeable and conversational that you're invited in as a listener. 5 stars, check it out!

    Love this idea!
Bringing people together to talk about the movies that scarred them as kids is such an awesome idea. After the Rob Grant ep (I love HARPOON) I say: more please!

You never forget your first terror
Fun podcast that delves into what films first haunted people. From talking about each film and what shows up on screen to the things your mind can’t let you forget after the credits roll, this is a really enjoyable podcasts for fans of all things spooky!

    Insightful and fun
It’s great to hear everyone’s horror “root”. So often the movie that started it all for a horror fan is something totally un-scary, yet it, well, scars us for life. It’s fun to hear Terry and Mary Beth reminisce with others about some of their favorite scary scenes, and it’s cool to get some insight from pros in the industry. I like this podcast so much that I actually wrote my first podcast review. Scarred for Life is definitely mandatory listening for horror lovers.

    Revisit those fears from yesteryears
I'm excited for this new podcast and the fascinating concept – revisit older films that traumatized you and see how they hold up. Hosts Mary Beth and Terry sound relatable and down to Earth – the kind of friends you'd want to hang out with for a movie night! Mary Beth is an exceptionally seasoned writer with more bylines than gawd, and Terry has built a large following as Gayly Dreadful on Twitter and his eponymous website. (I'll always show up to support queer voices in horror!) The podcast is also a good, digestible length. So many of them run 2 hours now making it very challenging to fully commit week after week. I am subscribed, and looking forward to revisiting those fears from yesteryears through the critically cool analysis of adulthood.

Fantastic and Fun Trip Down Memory Lanes
It’s early days yet, but I already love the laid-back yet incisive running commentaries on the delightfully traumatic moments we all had in our childhoods. This is one of the podcasts I jump to hit play on as soon as a new ep is available.

A great start with room to grow
Mary Beth and Terry start strong out of the gate with "Scarred for Life" a podcast based around the lasting effects movies seen on kids have on adults. It is a fun concept with some mileage in the tank. Both hosts come of well with a solid delivery that never feels stilted. While it is strong, there is room to grow. The theme is a bit too much of a banger from the start and Mary Beth's audio needs some tweaks. Everything else is about as good as you can ask for for a brand new podcast. Fully reccomended for fans of horror and remembering how movies traumatized you as a wee one.

    Why we love movies!
A wonderful addition to my usual podcast rotation. I fell in love with movies at a young age and there were plenty that scarred me for life, many of which weren't horror. I can't wait to see what films they tackle.

    Love!
I love this podcast! The thought behind it is amazing!! We all have movies that terrified us as children and maybe they still do or maybe they don’t anymore. Terry and Marybeth are awesome as they deep dive into what scared us!

    Like hanging with funny friends
We all have those movies that always stay with us because they pushed our creepout buttons. Relive those memories with funny, warm conversation here. Plus, they respect the daddy energy of Craig T. Nelson, so they know what they’re talking about!
