Going Mental with Eileen Kelly

569

GOING MENTAL was born out of host Eileen Kelly’s desire to reckon with the shame she felt around her mental health journey. Despite early career success, internal struggles and a crippling personality disorder drove Eileen to leave her exciting New York City life behind and seek treatment at McLean — one of the oldest mental hospitals in the country. After five months and some serious self-discovery, she returned to the outside world looking for a way to disseminate what she'd learned in treatment and connect to others with similar experiences. Each week, along with personal stories from Eileen, she interviews some of today’s most compelling media figures, artists, authors, and celebrities about their own mental health journeys, along with a range of experts who provide information and support around various mental conditions.New episodes releasing every Thursday.

    Eileen!
You’re the best. So sweet and real. And so honest and wise.

    Love the pod.
I see other reviewers comment on being an interviewer vs. conversationalist. I don’t think Eileen should choose. I like hearing both. I enjoy her interviews but also love love love when she talks with people in her circle like Annie, Sabrina, and Anna. I find her vulnerability in reflecting on her past refreshing. I hope she interviews more people in her circle. I would love to hear her interview some of her porn star friends like Rara Knupps and Stella Barry.

I’m currently re-listening to the episode with Dr. Igor Galynker, which left a big impression on me the first time around and was a great choice for a rerun. I lost my dad to suicide and this episode answered some of my old questions and gave me more clarity and peace on a situation that has always been foggy in my mind. The research of Dr. Galynker is so important and I hope the new distinctions are able to have an impact and spread awareness. The thing that marks me the most and keeps me coming back to Going Mental each week is the thoughtfulness of Eileen’s interviews and the stage she gives to each guest.

    Good not great
I’ve followed Eileen for many years and I appreciate her topics and subjects. I like her solo episodes but I think she struggles in interviewing. She often leads her subjects to her own conclusions and it seems she can’t decide between being an interviewer and being a conversationalist. It’s frustrating to hear her opinion being forced on to her subjects when the subjects could offer so much insight. If she becomes a better interviewer this could be great

    I love Eileen
Very sweet! I love the topics but I do wish to see more diversity in the group of guests

    Eileen keeps getting better
this podcast is so good. huge range of guests and topics. Eileen has a talent to make difficult conversations feel candid and approachable. ❤️Thank you for your work

Ignorant and invited racist guest without properly interrogating their past
Yeah, I don’t know how someone could defend Eileen after not just once- but TWICE, inviting racist guest to “have a conversation” but then never properly disclosing ALL of their guest’s racist past and gloss over important questions. Eileen isn’t a journalist, but having a large audience comes with some responsibility- something which Eileen doesn’t seem to understand. I hope she’ll come around a realize all the POC and trans women she’s hurt, I don’t have much hope. There are millions of podcast out there, you’re better off listening to any other one.

Eileen Kelly is the Grace Kelly of Mental Health
Like the lovely Grace Kelly who became a princess and did so much good in the world, Eileen has taken her lived experienced and struggles with mental health and made an open, honest and vulnerable podcast that has touched and inspired me in more ways than I could ever possibly list here. I am a therapist by training and someone who has struggled with their mental health for almost two decades. Despite being “in the field” and in the field of mental health, there is a lot that has gone unspoken for me, both personally and professionally. There is a lot of shame and stigma around mental health, diagnoses, and garnering the treatment you need. Eileen’s easy manner, warmth and genuineness, and her ability to take people who seem “untouchable” and “larger than life” in many ways and allow them the space to open up about their own mental health struggles is truly beautiful. This podcast helps to normalize and inform regarding mental health, advocating for your own needs (especially regarding treatment) and is just an overall delight to listen to. I’m so grateful that I came across her YT videos, which led me here, and that Eileen has had the courage to be raw and real and talk about the things that we all think and experience but may be too: afraid, ashamed, angry, disgusted, etc etc etc to talk about. 🖤

    So much misinformation
Spreading misinformation about sexual and mental health it’s annoying, do some research first

Your voice is great! And your interview style too!
Your vulnerability is your super power. This podcast is so informative, interesting, enlightening and crushingly relatable. Don’t listen to the haters- it’s not for them. Don’t change a thing!

    so much love for Eileen
Eileen’s with me in really weird, subliminal universe ways… all jokes aside, Going Mental is a weekly listen for me. listening Eileen candidly speak about her struggles with BPD has helped me to feel comfortable speaking about my mental health journey. as someone who’s struggles with OCD, i found her episode on obsessive compulsive disorder to be extremely informative. that episode helped me to find the right words to explain what having OCD is actually like - something I’ve always found extremely difficult. I’m also impressed with Eileen’s willingness to bring on a variety of guests on her show, ranging from mental health professionals to Trump’s former attorney. I don’t agree with every guest that’s brought on and I kinda think that’s the point. thank you, Eileen. you’ve been inspiring me for 6 years and counting.
  • Hannah K. Kern
    Wonderful!
Thank you Eileen for sharing your story! I think your voice is beautiful, actually one of the best to listen to. I was wondering if you could do an episode on OCPD? That would be really helpful and informative. Thank you for all that you do💜

    Destigmatizing / accessible / informative
I have been following Eileen since 2016, she’s one of the reasons I felt I could move to nyc at 17 for college. 8 years later, I recommend her podcast to everyone. She’s the reason I am open about my mental health, that I’m on lexapro, etc. What I admire most about Eileen is that she seeks the truth, no matter how uncomfortable, whether or not the choir (online community) sings praises. Her latest solo ep on BPD makes me feel like a proud little sister, my best friend has a very similar experience to Eileen’s, and she believes she may have BPD. Even before this episode came out, Eileen being so open about her diagnosis—I realized how biased I was towards bpd when in reality—what makes it so different than when I was going around undiagnosed with my (generalized anxiety) disorder? My friend also listens to going mental and we both agree it’s helped destigmatize what was so unknown and scary. I’m so impressed with the dialogue on this show and if I ever see Eileen in person, I will make sure to let her know of all the good she’s putting out there. Please if you’re struggling, see this as proof that you can work on yourself and get better❤️ knowledge is power

    I love her voice ok?
Raw, vulnerable, relatable podcast for women. I’m a 44 year old woman who loves the pod, Eileen as a host and listens to every episode.

    grateful
So grateful to you and this podcast. Especially this episode, your solo. I definitely feel like hearing your story deepens the intimacy that can be felt when listening to your podcast. I am always so grateful for when people with BPD experiences talk from the heart and from their vulnerability in their raw truth, because not only can I relate, but I gain a certain insight which is healing and therapeutic. There’s so much I learn and I’m often introduced to getting to know people that exist in this world in this very special way through your interviews. I appreciate all that you do.

    Best podcast out there
This is my favorite podcast out there. Eileen is so real, vulnerable and open. I love her solo episodes as well as her interviews. She has a great balance of interviewing and being a natural conversationalist. She has a great mix of guests and I’ve learned a lot from her.

    Favorite podcast ever
I cannot recommend this podcast enough. I tell my friends, families, and coworkers to listen to it. The various guests and topics Eileen includes are so intriguing and the questions she asks are amazing. I believe that Eileen is helping de-stigmatize mental health by bringing this to her demographic of young adult listeners and older listeners! Keep going, Eileen.

    Hit or miss
The new intro makes me cringe. I do feel like there is some poser energy here and not enough knowledge on what’s being talked about by Eileen. Some episodes have been good.

    Legitimate interviewer
Eileen does a truly great job. I’m super impressed by her intelligence and ethics. Keep killing it
  • Fgm83
    Great discussions
The most recent episode was fantastic but when Emily mentioned feeling “fat” in a photo and face tuning after, it was disheartening. I think it would have been fruitful to acknowledge how fatphobia and internalized fatphobia plays a role in her life/career and just our culture in general!
  • sayeh1999
    Pretty good, but listen critically!
I’ve been a follower and fan of Eileen’s since around 2016 and really enjoy almost everything she puts out! Since starting to listen to the pod, I just couldn’t stop and listened to all the episodes within about a week, and look forward to new episodes every week. My favorite episodes so far have been with Stella Barey and Steven Donziger—episodes have been both so interesting + informative + entertaining. I like her solo episodes too where we get to catch up with her and hear about what’s going on in her life. The one episode I really took issue with though was her functional medicine episode. I feel like if I didn’t know any better, I would’ve assumed Dr. Will Cole was a medical doctor though he is not. It really felt like he wasn’t letting on about what made him necessarily qualified to give advice as someone who is not a nurse practitioner or MD. “Functional” and “integrative” medicine has also received a lot m I’ll of skepticism over the last few years. I’m sure Dr. Cole is aware of the controversy around this; especially since the pandemic we have seen so many chiropractors, holistic practitioners, and midlevel health professionals not let on about their training and speaking outside the scope of their training that I think talking openly about what your training and what it ISNT should really be standard. I’m looking forward to Eileen’s episodes on UTI and bladder health as someone who has suffered for years, but am a bit skeptical now about content after she had Dr. Cole on her show.

    Love this podcast
Eileen has so many amazing guests on this podcast, Going Mental has been a really great resource for me on mental health/psychology related topics while also not being overly academic. As someone who has followed Eileen on social media for years I love being able to hear more about her life and how vulnerable she is, but I think this show would still be interesting to someone who wasn’t originally familiar with her. Definitely recommend giving it a listen :)

    Woke nonsense
Very bad podcast from boring morally bankrupt narcissists
  • am@nda780
    Unprofessional and weird
I have listened to a few episodes now and I just find Eileen to be bad interviewer. She interrupts guests and it’s very clear she often hasn’t done any research about the topic she’s discussing. She can’t have a conversation without centering herself.
  • EmersonElise
    Love
I love everything Eileen does, and this podcast is no exception! Such amazing guests, interesting topics & she has a calming voice in my opinion. 🫶🏽
  • MFMRose
    Idk
I used to really enjoy this podcast, but more recently I’ve noticed Eileen’s urge to spin the conversation towards her own experiences and opinions- often interrupting her guests which is irritating. Can we get some meatier questions?
  • Julie.bully
    love.
I just started listen to Going Mental in November of 2022 and I can tell you it is truly what I look forward to on Thursdays. I quite literally have listened to every podcast; I am OBSESSED. Seriously just a true admirer of your work and you are changing the view of how I and many others used to think about sexual health and mental health so thank you. I just love listening to what you and your guest have to say and absolutely love to share with the people around me so many things that I think everyone should know more about!🫶🏻🫶🏻🫂

    No
Dear Media - why are we giving this girl Eileen her own podcast? Her only “claim to fam” is going to McLean hospital for 3 months where in her most recent episode with Arielle Lorre states that she misses the feeling of no responsibility and no deadlines during that time haha. She said she recently “checked herself in” at a luxury spa resort Canyon Ranch after going through a difficult break up which literally costs $900 a night. Another completely out of touch, unrelatable, privileged person that didn’t go to college speaking into a microphone. She does not LISTEN to her guests which is quite apparent in the questions she asks and her guests’ reactions. Tune in only if you’re trying to hear someone play grown up. I’m shocked that Dear Media helps put actually interesting guests in front of this.
  • glennjs
    Informative + interesting to me
I particularly liked the one on suicide, as it was uplifting in its own way. I enjoy that she is interviewing on a wide range of topics. I usually pick and choose based on my own interests, so I’ll have to listen to more. Thanks 🙏 for sharing 🫶🏼

True Life: eCrush’d *she ain’t notice me!
Tbh I love this pod. I love eileen also. I’ve loved her since I graduated high school and found her social media. I would highly recommend her to a friend. Her platform is exactly what the next generation of kids need. This should no longer need to be a taboo, but an informational program.

    My favorite podcast
This podcast really is educational and so helpful for anyone, dealing with a mental illness or not, it’s so good to hear this woman and whoever she brings on educate and bring awareness to problems humans face, for someone with BPD and someone who recently got over severe social anxiety for the most part I love this so much, if you have anything going on or if you want to find information on so many related topics, this ones for you. Great work Eileen!

Like Facetime w/ Your Big Sister
I’ve been following Eileen for as long as I can remember & love all of her content. She feels almost like a big sister of social media. I think she’s got a really great team working with her to make sure they’re producing quality content. Love all of her guests & the questions she has for them. I do look forward to more solo episodes though!!

    Loved the Steven Donzinger ep
Favorite episode and such an important event. Shines sooooo much light on so many aspects of the corruption that exists in the US.

Could you discuss & have a guest on the show with first hand experience of being a woman on the spectrum?
  • Cruzandava111
    Dita episode
I really wish she would’ve asked her more of a deep dive about her life instead of just basic questions we all know about. It seemed very surface level and nothing new.
  • eeltenaj88
Transparency about mental health is everything
Eileen, hope you see this. I just want to say thank you for being so open about your BPD diagnosis. I got diagnosed last year and it’s been isolating at times bc like you, my life seems “together” and nobody knows the intensity of my emotions/romantic relationship. You make me feel so much less alone in this. 💜
  • grace.prkr
    Real
I find this woman to be so genuine- and I think her work here is not only entertaining, but sincere. Sometimes I don’t even initially consider some of topics as personally of interest to me, but there’s something about Eileen and they way she dives into the subject matter that makes it totally fascinating. And again, she just comes across as so heartfelt- like if you could pick all the qualities you want in a friend when you’re talking about the hard things, you’d pick her- she just has such a vulnerability it seems and I think that’s hard to find elsewhere. Ok, don’t mean to be cheesy. Definitely recommend.
  • papadapalapa
    “Sex educator”
I’ve given this podcast, Eileen, and the Killerandasweetthing brand multiple tries and honestly struggle to see much value in any of it. I consider myself very sex positive and accepting of all different kinds of lifestyles. This podcast however seems to highlight some of the worst elements of modern dating / sex and try to spin it in a positive light. I have no issue with bringing on guests from different walks of life and exploring their lives and stories. I think it’s a needed topic of discussion. But Eileen has a tendency to spin any women’s story as a story of empowerment, no matter how troubling some of them are. Supporting and empowering people is more than just saying good job to every person she manages to interview. Too often this podcast, and Eileen’s other social media platforms tends to end up as any choice or any sex women have is an empowering / inspirational story. I’d hesitate to ever call Eileen a “sex educator” these days just because she does interviews people who talk about sex.

    🥲
I’ve been following Eileen since I was 14 and now I’m about to turn 20 in a few weeks—she’s really been an inspiration for me throughout these formative years❤️ Going through high school and now the first two years of college, everything she talks about whether sex, friendship, or just mental health in general has helped keep me educated and just feel less alone. Going mental especially has opened my eyes/mind to so many different perspectives and given me a lot of valuable insight which I’m so grateful for:,) thank you eileen

    Purposeful
This is a great podcast for people who are lonely or Just around adults who think so boringly. I live in a small town and I feel like this is exactly what a 22 year old girl like me needs. these podcasts allow me to further, understand other peoples opinions but also myself too. It makes me feel like I keep learning every time I listen. I enjoy this podcast, I always wish they were longer. Keep it up, amazing 👍🏼
