    So annoying
I stopped listening after a couple of episodes. I found it ridiculous when she disqualified her opinion and insight regarding a painting because of the color of her skin. She is white and the painting was done by a black man. She basically denied her own humanity. Would my asian art history professor fumble through a similar disclaimer if we look at a Warhol print? At another point in the episode she uses a scoffing inflection in her voice when describing the white male european history of painting reclining female nudes. She tells us how this objectifies and codifies a certain power relationship….she then takes pains to tell us that the gay black artist’s depiction of a reclining sensual black man has no power dynamics, no objectification….simply because he is looking the viewer in the eye. Can’t we just accept that people paint and sculpt forms they find beautiful? Why do I need to be hit over the head with a woke stick when I learn about art? Why do we need to demonize European art, culture, technology, philosophy at every turn? So disappointed because she has selected wonderful pieces and is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about her subject.

    Interesting
I have learned some interesting things I didn’t know, and been exposed to artists I didn’t know that well. It’s a little dry in places, and the posting is not regular enough to stay in my top podcast list, but it’s ok for a nice car ride.

    Awestruck and delighted
One night, like most nights, I was trying to fall asleep, so I looked up art history, as I have really never found it interesting. As I listened, I just grew more interested, and realized there was no way I could fall asleep to something so interesting. Now, I listen to it almost everyday, and am always amazed and delighted by the intricately layer out history of famous, and lesser known art pieces.

    Provocative, smart, and entertaining
Allison’s well as an art historian runs deep, and she enhances each well chosen topic with compelling and relevant research. She packages up a juicy morsel of the world of art in each of her episodes. Highly recommended. Delish.

    Thought-provocative and interesting!
I do not have a background in art but the information, stories, and insights make this one of my favorite podcasts! So excellent!

    Love it!
Thanks so much for an amazing podcast! If you can do some on some episodes on artists like Picasso, Monet, Manet, Dali, Van Gogh (I know those are all randomly placed artists but some of my favourites), I would really appreciate it! Love the way you speak and don’t just focus on the art but the story behind the artist and the story behind the actual work. Absolutely amazing, thank you!

She is very knowledgeable! I was aware of some of the biblical insight she gave during Gilded Gingerbread, and was impressed with how in-depth she went when giving the background information.

    Best!!!
Tried to find an art history podcast for soooo long (it’s difficult to discuss art through audio) and this one checks all the boxes. Not voiced by a bored sounding dude, not a limited series, not bouncing back and forth between tipsy sorority sisters. Just a calm, descriptive lady choosing really interesting pieces. I only wish there was more content! Thank you for your wonderful show

    Incredibly Informative
I grew up with an artist mother who would drag me to museums all of the time. Subsequently, I rebelled and embarassingly now know NOTHING about art. I know I enjoy it but I know nothing about it. I love Allyson's podcast. She makes art accessible and relateable. I learn so much and I'm able to retain the information becuase of the way she presents it. Absolutely reccomend for the art lover and the art dummy (like me) ;)

    The Mysterious Mona Lisa
Episode 1 on the Mona Lisa is filled with amazing informaiton. This is one of my favorite portraits, and Leonardo is one of my favorite painters. Great analysis and history of this iconic portrait.

It is such a pleasure to hear you describe these new (to me) artists and their pieces. Thank you. Total enjoyable.

    Completing my education!
Art history is an embarrassing hole in my education. I've been to museums all over the world--love art, love museums, love history and architecture, etc. I was never given the opportunity to take an art history or art appreciation class, so I can only imagine how many people know far less because they're not able to visit museums or they've grown up thinking museums are too stuffy. Art IS for everybody and it should be accessible. That's exactly what Allyson does--makes it all accessible. AND interesting. I started with the very first episode, even though the Mona Lisa is just kind of "yeah, yeah, okay" for me. (I've even seen her in person, but she's just never really captured my imagination as other works have.) HOWEVER, Alllyson made it so interesting, and I did learn a few facts I hadn't know. She's very engaging and each subject is well-researched. I can't wait to learn about works of art I may not have even heard about!

Best art history podcast out there
The title says it all. This is the best art history podcast available. It is well scripted, clear, accurate, and made to be quite interesting even for the average person who is not necessarily an art nerd.

    Perfection 10/10
Art, Art History in particular, can be so inaccessible; I’ve always liked it, but have never felt like I had the time resources or energy to dig in, shallow or deep... until this podcast. Allyson Healey bridges the heck out of that gap by pairing concise academic analysis with contextual anecdotes. The structure of the episodes rewards and merits intermittent snippets of listening as well as extended and repeated consumption. Humor, tragedy, the old, the new, RELEVANCE... its all there. 10/10, thanks for creating this.

It’s so refreshing to hear a down to earth, informative podcast about art history! Not even a little bit dull or boring I wish Allyson was my teacher when I was studying at school. Love this pod!!

Context is everything and they deliver
Culture is really what makes art history amazing. The context the art was made in and how it translates brings the art to life in ways dated and images can’t. Allyson does a beautiful job at presenting this. I’m blown away by it. I wasn’t prepared for such critical thinking but I’m so there for it. 💕

    AMAZING and Relaxing!!
Allyson is able to provide you the whole picture in this podcast. As someone who tends to go to art museums and just go, "huh," when staring at 90% of the pieces, I highly enjoy Art History For All. You do not need to know a THING about art to appreciate this podcast! It's also incredibly relaxing to listen to, and I highly recommend having a cup of tea and some cookies on hand. :)

    Great Info and Potential
I enjoy this podcast and I think I’ve finally found an art history podcast that challenges me and what I don’t know. Thank you Allyson for your careful study! My main critique would be to refresh the music. The theme is nice, but could use some fine tuning. Maybe save it just for the beginning and end, I get confused when it comes on in the middle of an episode. The angelic digital voices could be substituted with a less canned sound. But keep up the good work! I have learned so much!
  • aadebiyi
Very informative with a modern twist
I enjoyed learning more about art history and in an approachable way. Furthermore, Allyson leaves us with points to consider further about the meaning and place of art in our every day lives. 10 out of 10 would recommend. :)

    Wow!
I know very little about art history and this podcast is absolutely captivating! It took me away to another world and I loved it! The host also has an amazing voice that is perfect for story telling!

    Lifting the veil...
This podcast has become my not-so-guilty pleasure at the end of each month. Allyson Healey dives deep into one work for each episode, bringing it to life, placing it in historical and cultural context, and illuminating fascinating detail. As mostly a layperson when it comes to viewing and appreciating art, I find this podcast to be well-researched and engaging.

    fascinating and always pleasant :)
i love this podcast! it's incredibly informative and well-researched, and i absolutely love the narrator! they're never condescending or pretentious, and they always present things like they're reading from a well-loved and only slightly sardonic personal account of the art world. maybe they are! maybe they're immortal. this podcast MIGHT follow an immortal art historian talking about art history, but you'll have to listen to find out, won't you? ;) additionally, a fellow reviewer here on the app store expressed an inexplicable disgust in the narrator's ability to recognize that they (a white person) don't have the same perspective on the world as an artist (a black person whose work is built on expressing and discussing their experiences as a black person). i wanted to mention this to potential listeners because i don't want them to be put off by that weird review. i think that it's incredibly important when working within an anthropological topic such as art history to recognize your differing world view. it is wild how upset that person got, yo. this is just a time traveling art historian. tune in, my man.

    Good but...
I almost threw up when the narrator had to apologize for being white before critiquing the a black artist on episode 2. What the hell man! I’m or even white and that made me feel she was so pathetic. If I hear any of that crap again I’ll seriously have to reconsider this podcast. It just made her sound so preposterous that it’s taking her credibility away. So mad because other than that so far this podcast seems worthwhile.
  • habanabababa
fascinating with a note of whimsy
Speaking as someone with very little background in art history, I found this podcast to be both accessible and fun! The host has a wonderful radio voice and has clearly got a ton of enthusiasm and knowledge of her subject. Plus, writing chops! The jokes were sprinkled in at strategic moments to reel my attention back in, and the storytelling felt coherent rather than just a grab-bag of trivia. The host doesn't just come at it from the art perspective, but also brings in history, gender studies, etc. Sound design was quite professional-- rare for a podcast that's just getting started out! Highly recommended.
