ChvrchGrimmSuperbI think I’ve been listening since the pandemic. I only listen to the movies and/or shows I’ve seen. There’s another movie podcast that I’ve seen reviewers refer to as being better, and might be more popular, but this is one of the better ones out there IMHO. Part of the appeal of ‘Podcast Like It’s… ‘ is that guests and hosts are given the time to finish their thoughts. Phil is a sweetheart. I was nervous at first about Kenny leaving and Emily taking over as “guest host” but Emily is a gem. I hope this pod goes on forever. I know it’s corny, but seriously. Keep doing this. Xo

PhopbuttAmazingKenny is the best thing ever. I just started this podcast and have been binging it for weeks.
-
Bob ShowerDecentBad movie podcast unintentionally. Avoid.

Carson 236Not a good introductionJust listened to my first episode of your podcast. You opened by stating (and arguing about, but landing on the wrong conclusion nonetheless) that Good Will Hunting was filmed after Talented Mr. Ripley. The director has openly stated Damon was cast as Ripley after he saw GWH…. Jeez guys.

BobbyBubbyEmily!!!Emily is a great addition to the pod! Keep her at all costs. Loving the 1992 episodes.

AudreyistaFun and informativeI love that this podcast focuses on how both film and television have changed since the late 90s. The episodes are always fun and informative. I loved that Phil did a deep dive on Ally McBeal and highlighted the things it did well instead of only focusing on the things it did poorly. On the Ally McBeal episode, you mentioned you wanted the perspective of someone in Gen Z who’d watched it. I was born in 1997 and I have a very ambivalent relationship with it. I thought it was frequently a hilarious show, I was a fan of the non-archetypal characters and I loved Ally’s whimsical hallucinations. I also appreciated that Ally was still single at the end of the series, not because they were trying to make a feminist statement but because their plans for her endgame romances didn’t work out. At the same time, the show often came across as very sexist. I disliked how Ally was never able to see herself as a whole person without a man and I wasn’t a fan of how the show seemed to have an axe to grind against sexual harassment laws.

nowplayingjimexcellent show, incredibly smart hostsIf they really wanted to podcast like it’s 1999, they would’ve recorded using Radio Shack microphones on cassette, but that’s beside the point. This is a quality film analysis podcast that also takes into account the time and place these movies came out. So many great episodes, it’s hard to pick a favorite. I really just enjoy the hosts both here and on other podcasts as well. I don’t alway agree with their takes but at the same time, I never get annoyed or irked. It’s just a solid, consistent movie podcast that I look forward to. Subscribe, especially if you’re curious about that year in film and you should be!

Mario SavioToo Much TrumpJust started listening and of the episodes I’ve binged, I’ve really enjoyed them with the exception of the part of each and every episode that the hosts turn into an explanation of how the media in question predicted the Trump presidency. Even though I agree with the hosts’ politics, these conversations come off as obsessive and cartoonish and really take away from the overall conversation. Sometimes simply talking about entertainment suffices without wedging personal paranoias in.
-
ColleenTenbusThe Actual BestI adore this podcast. From the movies to the special series on Felicity, Sex and the City, West Wing etc; I am hooked!! I love the banter between Kenny and Phil and Phil’s laugh is infectious. Keep them coming!
-
dmillergGreat showI stumbled upon this show about 6months ago. And I went through all the back catalogue. I love 1999. This show is made for me!
-
GerderManA Must ListenPhil and Kenny are great guides through the films and culture of 1999. They have a real energy and unique point of view that leads to fascinating tidbits and discussions you won’t find on many other podcasts.
-
puercsterFun film podcastGreat concept and fun cohosts who bring the perspective of working film and television writers. If you are a fan of Blank Check you will like this show.
-
BryanK11Great conceptI started listening to this podcast yesterday because the hosts have gone on record as loving Nicolas Cage’s The Rock. I have since listened to five or six episodes and will continue to do so. The hosts are highly knowledgeable, the film conversation enjoyable, and the concept to cover all the films from a particular year in history is great.
-
applerosegrill720Non-celebrity podcast - thank goodnessRefreshing to listen to a non-celebrity podcast....as if celebrities have more of a right to spread their opinion to hold a podcast than others. Host uses a number of “um’s” which is so annoying and please please get better audio when guests are being interviewed! The last one about Sex and the City was like listening to a guest sitting and talking through a muffled paper bag.So hard on the ears to want to keep listening.
-
larbbLove the context analysisI love movie rewatch podcasts and was pumped to find this one. I love how they recontextualize 1999 movies through today’s lens and acknowledge what won’t work anymore and why. People who call this virtue signaling: its film cultivation theory. Grow up. I’m a MASSIVE rewatcher and really like the thorough examination of cultural placement of the films then v now. Love when they talk about the sopranos. One of them interrupts too much and it can get rambly. But whatever, it’s free. Great show 👍
-
Sun_WorshipperGood, occasionallyGood when they cover interesting or decent movies, not so good when they cover Felicity episodes, pop music, or blah movies that even the hosts don’t seem to care about. Also, way too slow to get to the point. The first half of the podcast is often one host talking to a guest about where they went to high school or some other random and irrelevant thing. Sometimes they’re 45 minutes in by the time they start discussing the movie. In short, this podcast is occasionally very good but there is too little structure and too few episodes focusing on good movies.
-
Aaron Ricks not ajNot as good as Blank CheckYet they do everything they can to completely copy it. The matrix episode is one of the most painful things I’ve ever listened to.
-
fyc777lol at all the reactionary backlashAll the neckbeards complaining that two people would dare to examine the changing social mores that necessarily impact the film landscape, and engage in some nuanced critical reappraisal—for a podcast about films produced during the second Clinton administration, for crying out loud—need to lighten up. Not saying this pod is the most profound demonstration of New Historicist thought...but maybe that’s the point. No pleasure is inherently guilty, but it’s essential (and almost always more rewarding) to discuss culture in context.
-
My DoooodNot for meListened to like 15-20. Lot of blatant factual errors (the insistence, from one host, that Fantasia was a hit in its original run is one that stuck), bad takes, and a general squishiness. It’s lame that The Ringer ripped them off though.
-
Aapa1982InsufferableCloying virtue signaling; inability to stay on topic; tries way too hard to be cool. Critically, the two hosts just aren’t that bright. They might have “ripped” them off but the Ringer crew did much better justice to the movies of 1999 than these two clowns.
-
CJ SweetSuper insightfulLove this pod! Hosts are super knowledgeable and get great guests. Loved the Ravenous ep. Q: When will you cover Pushing Tin? The 1999 movie that brought us Angelina and Billy Bob!? 🖤💉
-
JonPernisekYes Please to 1999!My entry point for this series was the Toy Story 2 double header featuring Griffin Newman as the guest and I’m fully on board for this show’s premise and style of commentary. Anyone who’s complaining about “virtue signaling” should be written off, as this is the type of bad faith listener who automatically balks the second someone’s personality “gets in the way” of “objective” analysis. Those people are broken and should not be given the time of day. Listen to 1999, you’ll dig it!
-
Agent flootsENOUGH FREAKS AND GEEKSI like this show, but I’ve had my fill.
-
DB Cooper 73Woke RevisionismIf you’re curious how your beloved movie or show fails to meet modern standards of political correctness, this is the show for you. If you find “problematic” criticism to be the lamest possible approach, skip it.
-
MJB1981I want to love this podcast. This podcast is a great idea. 1999 was a great year for movies. But I just can’t get past the constant virtue signaling. Everything is viewed through the overly-PC 2019 lense. It’s as if the hosts want you to feel guilty for liking these movies.
-
Definitely Not MaxReliving My YouthHoly hell 1999 was quite the year for movies. I really appreciate Phil and Kenny for bringing that to my attention via this podcast. Half of the movies they've covered so far, I spent my late teens watching repeatedly on TV or DVD. It's also encouraged me to revisit a number of films that I had shrugged off as awful, but were actually great films *coughLIFEcough*. And vice versa. Keep it up, guys. You're doing great work.
-
jfa9knrvnHalf good, Half CringeThese guys are fine. Their bonafides speak for themselves. The films from this year certainly merit being discussed over a great expanse. Holy cow, though, does this show go all in on virtue signaling and trumpeting the PC ideology of the moment. Unlike the films from 1999, I'm afraid these discussions will feel horribly outdated in due time. If the discussion was 75% aesthetics and 25% ideology it would be easier to counteanance, but way too often it feels like those categories are reversed.
-
sthef360Accept No SubstitutesThere's been some other podcasts recently that have sprung up and are trying to jump on the 1999 bandwagon, but don't be fooled; this is the real deal. These dudes know and, more importantly, love the movies of '99 in a way that a true 1999 fan can just sense. Never been a big Magnolia fan, but I'm excited to hear the boys try and change my mind! -Kapitein Fox
-
maddie_jayLove it!Great podcast
-
warrior possumEyes too big for stomachI dig this podcast in theory. Problem is, I haven’t bothered to listen since before the Detroit Rock City episode because I don’t care about every terrible movie made in 1999. Stick to high and standout low points and move on to the year 2000.
-
Tom Cruise From MyspaceHi it’s me Tom CruiseI really like the Eyes Wide Shut episode because I’m Tom Cruise and I was in Eyes Wide Shut
-
sid16rgtWhat a year, what a podcast1999 was such a landmark year in film, it's awesome to hear the people who love movies break them down. Phil and Kenny are funny and insigtful and a joy to listen to. This and Blank Check are the movie podcasts to follow.
-
Revieweree12345Great year. Great hosts. Great podcast.Who is the funny guy in the chair with the Mets hat? - self made comment
-
wydellbAwesome podcast but...I have listened to almost every episode! Great podcast but dear god please stop saying “sure sure sure, yes yes yes, I agree I agree!”
-
The Most Tak3n NicknameLet’s all talk at once, all the time, foreverInteresting premise from a couple of guys who obviously care a lot about movies, but they haven’t seemed to figure out that having 3 or 4 dudes taking over each other into our ears does not make for quality listening. Also, might it make more sense to do at least a quick synopsis at the start just in case the listener hasn’t seen the movie?
-
HiiiExhaultedMy favorite film podcast. Period.Finding a podcast about movies that don’t involve dudes with phony Moviefone acting voices is tough so I’m glad that Podcast Like It’s 1999 is a laid-back talk that feels very genuine and never trying to be overly showy. Even on movies from ‘99 that I don’t agree with them on, Kenny and Phil still provide an episode with great facts and even greater banter. There’s some movies I’d never watch from ‘99 if they didn’t cover it but it makes it that much better of a watch because I know I get to listen to an awesome episode of this podcast afterwards.
-
MaggieSmithBlackMambazoLOVE this podcast, but...I came across this podcast after it was mentioned in an article covering the amazing year in film that was 1999, and I’m so glad I did! I love their insights, the fact that they take the time to back up and explain little “inside baseball” remarks they make along the way, and just the general film nerdiness of it all. The one star I’m knocking off is for the (in my opinion, very grating) dismissive, borderline condescending “sure sure sure”s and “yea”s that Phil throws out nearly constantly while Kenny’s diving into his theories and hypotheses. I’m sure it’s intended to come off that way, and these guys seem like genuine buddies, but man is the way he says them just comes off as a real know-it-all vibe. That said, love the podcast and look forward to future episodes!
-
DaytimedramaA really fun listenLoving this podcast! Even for the films I haven’t seen since 1999. Great hosts with a good rapport even if I can’t tell their voices apart at times (hint: listen closely for Phillip Iscove’s subtle Canadian-isms). Love these deep dives and looking forward to more episodes.
-
NKOASThoroughly engrossingA lot of movie podcasts are just dudes spouting off opinions, but the hosts here bring real facts and interesting perspectives, making for a thoroughly engrossing experience. I look forward to many more episodes.
-
Yair007Great rapport between hostsLove this idea - what a watershed year for cinema - can't wait to rewatch these in 2017 without having to drive to Blockbuster, find a parking spot for half an hour and then walk around a blue and yellow maze for another half an hour a la '99.
-
JJLuvsTV1999... interesting..Totally didn't even think about how many great movies all came out within the same year! Love this PODCAST already. Only realizing how spoiled we were to get Fight Club AND Matrix in the same year! Phil and Kenny are cool and smart and think they have some interesting thoughts already. As someone who HATED Eyes Wide Shut... this was a great conversation about this film. Look foward to what's to come... subscribe!
