The coroner was a short man. Some would say embarrassingly short. Enough to give a man a complex. Not me. Height is arbitrary. A genetic fact. A man could no more control his height than a promising centre-back could control which scouts showed him interest. Some of the best footballers in the world were short men, and I respected them. “He was murdered, obviously,” added the coroner with annoyance. I was growing to dislike him more and more.

I wasn’t watching football in this era, but the podcast is still very funny to me. Not all episodes are comprehensible—I tend to skip the quizzes and some of the documentaries—but the interviews are really wonderful. Highly recommended! Only downside is that the Patreon is significantly overpriced.

We will all remember quarantine for different reasons. I’ll remember it as the time when I discovered ‘Quickly Kevin.’ The first three episodes I heard were hilarious! The FIFA movie followed by the two part Carlton Palmer podcast. Regular listener now. Highly recommended if you like to reminisce about 90’s footie and like creative content. @mike_mmcdonald

Love the pod but can’t help feeling you’re missing a trick. With the price of a Steve Barnes nice skyrocketing why don’t you get in touch with the publisher about doing the audiobooks along with Ivo? I for one would buy all 3 to be able to fully enjoy this ahead of its time crime/sports series. Maybe get Steve to join the team for it?

As I took another sip of the chamomile nectar, I mused on what first made prior generations make the decision to pour boiling water over leaves in order to create such a drink? Whatever inspired them, they obviously had more time on their hands for this kind of experimentation than I did. Maybe once I have finished my career in the beautiful game I would be able to devote time to concocting delicious drinks, but right now my time was better spent. The natural stress relievers in the tea had worked their magic, and I was able to think clearer now. 'What time did the call come in Julie?' I asked, noticing that her general appearance was a little more unkempt than usual. 'About 10am Steve, by the way...do you want another cup?' 'You little temptress, not now thanks.' I knew if I were to become any more relaxed, I may have to join Sir Lawrence for a mid afternoon nap...and after finding a decapitated body in the dressing room this morning I didnt really have time for that. After firing up the motor and listen to it beautifully purr for a few minutes, I set off on my way to Burnwick. Peter Penrise was a mate, but I was very unsure about how he would react when I told him about this mornings gruesome find. Let alone when I show him that I had placed the body in the Jaguar XJ8's sizable boot, so as not to alarm the rest of the squad. They didn't need that image in their minds right now...we have a six pointer with Moddlesbrough to worry about on Tuesday. I reached Burnwick and pulled up to the house of Peter Penrise, he came out of the door to greet me as I pulled up on the drive. With front and rear cameras on the Jaguar I am able to accurately pull into parking spaces easily, Peter Penrise is a good mate but I could tell by the look in his eyes when he looked at the car, along with my perfectly perpendicular parking that there was a hint of jealously...I wasn't surprised, this is a desirable motor. We had some playful banter and shook hands. 'I see you could only manage a draw against Birkpool this weekend?' I sniggered. 'Yes thats right' Peter Penrise replied. We both laughed, but I knew I had a more serious matter to speak with Peter Penrise about. 'Take a look in the boot I said' very carefully tossing the keys to the Jaguar XJ8 Sport Version, V reg to him. I could have opened the doors, including the boot myself using the cars supplied remote control, one of the cars many excellent features. But the last thing I wanted to do was appear to be showing off. Peter Penrise opened up the boot to reveal the headless body of our star midfielder Gerry Giles. 'Oh my goodness' Peter Penrise groaned 'What happened?' 'No idea mate,' I checked my watch, eager to get back on the road.......

It’s Monday afternoon, and of course we have the Monday night game. It’s what’s us soccer coaches call the classic 6 pointer. I’ve never understood that, as we only need 3 pints to go up. I think about my team selection for night big match against East Bromwich Albion. I think back to the advice my old coach at Hamchester United gave me. Most people today call him Sir Alex, but to me he will always be gaffer! You need to have balance in the midfield he always said. I think back on he amazing team. The amazing Bryan Goggs on the left. Rob keen bossing the middle with Paul sholes. And the brilliant crossing abilities of David Beecham on the right. If only I had a team like that! I took a trip to Scotland once with the gaffer. He showed me the street he grew up on in a small village. The was on 4 small houses on the street and the haggis factory at the end on the road. We stood outside house number 7 and he said to me “son, it doesn’t matter where you come from, it only matters where you are going. Tonight I know where my team are going. All the way to the top!!!!

As I sat thinking about my day, and our Monday night fixture coming up against Stolton Ponderers, I program came to mind that I think all should know. I was listening via my Apple device, and it gave me hours of joy. Now I know exactly what you’re thinking, “How can you listen to ANYTHING via a piece of fruit”? That’s a valid question, but I’m referring to my palm sized computer that makes phone calls. I immediately phoned a good friend of mine, manager of high flying Prestfield North East, Alan Kneel. He’d informed me that he heard about the Quickly Kevin podcast via a “journo” friend of his, Paul Ince. You can imagine the thoughts running wild in my mind: Is this the same man that’s tried to catch me with a blonde either side of me leaving a club? Surely not, surely there’s more than one Paul Ince in the world? I didn’t do the research, but put faith it’s not the same man as I’ve actually met a Paul in a trip years ago to Brazil..and Brazil is mainly Paulista and Pablo, but not a Paul, so I assumed it wasn’t the same man. We decided to all 3 meet up for a double scotch...around 1pm in the day. It turns out it was the “journo” I’d initially feared. Despite this, I couldn’t help but think of the famous quote by past US President, FDR: The only thing we have to fear, is the fear of ones self. That might not be verbatim, but I’m a football manager, not Shakespeare. Enjoy the pod.

As Highbury was sold out, a friend recommended that I see an “up and coming” team called Chelsea. A Mark Nicholls brace, and a dummy through Mark Hughes resulting in a Roberto DiMatteo goal and I was hooked. I also thought, misguidedly so, that Mark Nicholls was good enough to play in France ‘98. 20 years later, Josh, Chris, and Michael provide me with the 1990s football education I never had. It creates a sense of nostalgia for a time and place I was never really part of. Highly, highly recommended. PRO TIP: If you’re trying to binge listen and catch up, try listening in 1.5x speed. Worth it just for hearing the boys’ laughs at high speed.

90s football was truly the golden era of the game and this podcast has given me reason to waste countless work hours researching obscure players like Martin Dahlin, Philemon Masingo and Andrea Silenzi. Keep it up!
