Approachable show about regenerating our society and its relationship to itself and the Earth
A show with hosts that are unafraid to talk about the way things really are. Approachable, relevant content that builds on a growing movement of content creators and journalists that are trying to show how the capitalist economic system tends to lead to more suffering and that socialistic ways of organizing ourselves can lead to human thriving through more democracy.

    Necessary, Relevant, Difficult
I have only listened to a handful of episodes, and I am confident saying this podcast is one of the most important productions of the podcast era. Episodes are robustly informative, well structured, and eye-opening. I think about Upstream’s content all the time. I recommend it to everyone I know who wants to be better informed about the world we have while preparing to build the world we want. Support Upstream any way you can, they are doing rare work.

    My kind of party
I don’t listen to podcasts for the most part. Most of them are just mindless babble. Upstream is the exception. It’s informative, based on REAL history, and doesn’t ride the fence about the need for revolution.

    It’s like college 2.0!
I studied politics in college and loved it! When I graduated last year and started working at a nonprofit, I was worried I would stop learning new things. When I listen to this podcast, it feels like I’m back at a college lecture. Thanks!

Grateful for this source of information!
Della and Robert curate profound conversations with well-educated and thought-provoking writers, scientists, educators and movement leaders. As someone who greatly desires progressive social change, this is one of my favorite sources for further educating myself on topics I care about. Thank you, Upstream!

    Supporting terrorism is unacceptable.
Just because Israel is committing genocide doesn’t give the other side a free pass to commit atrocities.
  • Seeker2077
    ableist and dishonest
Hosts post false low rates of US covid deaths and faith-based “look to God for vocational guidance” inspirational trash to their social media accounts. Ableist, religious conservative, anti-science wolves in progressive clothing.
  • Frustr@TEDx
    Insightful and inspiring
Pretty cliché... and still accurate. This podcast continues to encourage listeners to not just think critically about what's wrong with the current dominant economic system, but act as individuals and communities to resist this model and develop alternatives for all of us!

Brilliant and So Important Right NOW
Love this podcast. The heart of the hosts and minds of the hosts and guests are so refreshing and enlightening. Here we go! I want the evolution to happen ASAP! Who’s with me!? Let’s change this world into a beautiful paradise of sharing resources and helping each other <3

    Grifters commodifying “revolutionary” politics
I used to like this podcast, but as I’ve grown in my politics I see now how these people are just NPR wannabes with “socialist” aesthetics. Robert cannot handle a shred of critique (ironic for a so-called “Marxist”) and purposely ignores the national liberation struggles of indigenous nations in favor of Eurocentric, class reductionist views. Disgusting to use Palestine for podcast income. You should be ashamed of yourselves for every dollar you’ve made off of the wisdom of those truly fighting oppression and for every new “leftist” you’ve held back with your weak, dated, colonial chauvinist views.

    Essential Podcast
This is my favorite podcast - it’s thoughtful, full of deep, imaginative conversations, featuring amazing guests, difficult questions about imperialism, economics, and what else is possible for us to live better, more balanced, more compassionate lives. Highly recommend

Must-listen for folks from the Global North
I’ve listened to Upstream for years now (I’m also a Patreon subscriber). This podcast has completely changed my perspective on the world, and helped me better understand systems of oppression and my responsibilities as someone from the Global North/Imperial Core. Each episode exposes me to new information and lived experiences that help me identify and unlearn the propaganda and ideologies I’ve been fed my whole life, so I can make choices that defy the imperialist capitalist machine.

    Invaluably informative
There is no other podcast out there that so thoughtfully juggles the struggles of our existence in this time. If we are to survive this, we must educate and strategize together and upstream is doing the work to get us there. Do not miss an episode, subscribe and become a patreon!!!

    Wonderful Program!
Upstream offers unique, well-informed insight into domestic and global issues. This is essential listening for folks looking for answers to the complex issues we face today. Approachable to people new to the Left, or looking to dabble in alternative solutions, AND comprehensive for seasoned Marxists, this program’s long form content can challenge anyone’s worldview. Great challenging, thought provoking show!
This show has really challenged my thinking about many things related to economics and society as a whole. I deeply appreciate the commitment the creators have to asking difficult questions and challenging the status quo.

    Essential listening
This is essential educational content that should be taught in all schools. As a filmmaker with an economics background, I’ve yearned to tell stories that challenge the extractive, capitalist and dystopian narratives. This podcast fills my heart and mind with possibilities and I appreciate it.

    I always learn something new
Thank you for this resource. Such a great jumping off point for beginning or continuing learning practical socialist principles and understanding more about the harmful structures around us.

    Dangerous Ideology
Run far and fast away from this pro-Hamas podcast. The people behind it refuse to engage in good faith debates about their content and will block anyone who tries to share a different point of view or facts that go against their claims. They spew lies and misinformation even after being corrected. They hate the US, but still live here. They want to give land back, but not the land they live on. They give viable socialist theory a very bad name. And they are just.plain.mean.
  • Kika_Jezebel
    Informative, inspiring, and RELEVANT!
I wanted to learn about the Occupy movement and of course! when I searched for something online Upstream was the first pod I found. I am looking forward to listening to more episodes and learning more about these relevant topics.

    Changed my whole perspective
I listened to two episodes with Jason Hickel about degrowth and it radically changed my understanding about how the Global North robs the Global South. Colonization never ended — it just changed tactics. Dr. Hickel explained that all so clearly — I can’t see the world the same again. This compelled me to get more active in my local community — with other socialists and those who have been harmed the most by capitalism, like those who are unhoused.

    An uncomfortable listen
I started listening to this podcast with the episode discussing Dialectical Materialism, with J. Sykes. I found it after seeing a post on Instagram from the host, Robert Raymond, then searching him out on Twitter, and then on to his podcast. In this particular episode, I found myself feeling some very difficult feelings when the guest made the comment that the state of Israel was largely funded by the United States and that of the US stopped supporting Israel, they would “cease to exist.” And with that comment, it made me think he was asserting that the Palestinians would completely destroy Israel. Now it’s possible that I misunderstood his comment. But I don’t know if I’ll ever get an answer from him. A little later, J. Sykes makes another point that the only way both Israelis and Palestinians will know peace is if there is a single secular society where both can live side-by-side. And I would agree with that. Israel would need to be like the United States, and that would be allowing for both groups to practice their religions freely, and the politics would be secular in nature. Unfortunately, I don’t know if we’ll ever see this come about in my lifetime. I believe that the religious nature of the conflict is too great to overcome. But I hope I’m wrong. Apart from this, I am interested to learn how the hosts would view their ideology (Marxism/Leninism) taking root in America. Would they see if as billionaire ceasing to exist? Would every corporation in America be a co-op? I’d love to learn more. But as I said in the title of this review, I’m sure it would be an uncomfortable listen.

    Let this radicalize you
Upstream gives me more background information on topics I want to know more about and dive deeper into. I have a hard time listening to podcasts because I have an audio processing disorder, but I always make sure to listen into this one. The info is too important not to. I’m so glad they exist and are doing the work they are. Thanks y’all!

    The tastiest brain food
Upstream is by far one of my favorite podcasts. Some of the episodes have deeply changed the way I understand the world, for the better. Every time I listen, I make connections between modernism, economics, neoliberal politics, and the way people relate to each other and themselves. It's all of the things that traditional liberal education doesn't want you to know.

    Depth of Research is Unmatched
Continually one of my favorite podcasts. I have a degree in economics from an elitist “Ivy League” uni and concurrently listened to your podcast throughout my studies and many times felt like I was learning more valuable info from your episodes in critical economics than I was throughout my formal education. Incredibly valuable interpretations of the econ field, which in formal study can be overly focused on neoclassical ideas which aren't even grounded in good theory! The contradictions! Also, I have SO appreciated your series on Palestine. I have been studying war and the occupation of Palestine for 10+ years and your podcasts provide incredible historical depth filled with critical reflections - I have learned so many new things. Thank you, sincerely!! One of the only reasons I look forward to cleaning my apartment is the opportunity to listen to this podcast 😂😂
