Ben Smith’s podcast is one of the best on photography. I especially like that he focuses on the photographer rather than foolishly trying to make it a conversation between two equals. Two pet peeves: first, he is at times too intimidated by the photographers to push back or probe further when necessary (Ian Barry’s offensive comments re sexual harassment, Chris Anderson’s perennial evasiveness about his post-processing, etc). Second, he doesn’t own up to it in subsequent episodes after listeners call him out on social media. Public acknowledgement, a sincere apology, and pledge to do better (followed by action, of course) are owed and would elevate the podcast. Taking accountability reflects maturity and professionalism, and it would deepen trust and credibility with listeners.

Listening to Ben Smith’s Small Voice podcast is probably the best one thing a photographer can do to open the mind, learn, get inspired, and improve one’s process. I discovered the work of photographers I never knew and found the authentic and witty conversations invaluable for advancing my journey in photography. Thank you Ben for covering all the relevant aspects that are unique to each photographer as only an experienced pro could do.

Ben's Small Voice podcast is always high on my list of photography podcasts to listen to. It is the pinnacle of photographer interviews. I like how the interview often goes of on an unexpected tangent. Keep up the hard work!

Unlike most podcasters, Ben rarely inserts himself into the conversation. He keeps his focus on his guest, asking well-researched questions and encouraging his guests to talk at length about their lives, experiences, and photo practices. He is also one of the few podcasters who regularly interviews women.

there are so many garbage photo podcasts. without even comparing this one to those, this is a very solid pod. i discover new artists, and get a really good sense of them with bens curious and deep interviewing skills. thank you!

I love photography and love podcasts but I there are very few photography podcasts that I love. This is one of my favorite photography related podcast that I listen to and top 10 in all podcasts overall. I really can’t explain what draws me to it, so I recommend if you haven’t already listened to it, to pick any episode and give it a listen. The worst thing that could happen is that you got a little information about a great photographer you might have never discovered. 🤘🏽

A beautiful dive into the minds of some of the world’s most interesting photographers. I really appreciate his heart on the sleeve, no nonsense approach. These are fireside chats that are best enjoyed with a nice cuppa… conversations that will prove to be an incredible legacy for future generations. Congrats indeed Ben.

I don’t think MCB is racist. Michael Christopher Brown is 100% an opportunist. His “work” on skid row is simply an effort to monetize and take advantage of an issue he doesn’t understand and doesn’t care about. When his work slowed down he wanted to use the homeless to jumpstart his career.

I discovered Ben Smith’s series of excellent podcasts only after his interview with Ibarionex on The Candid Frame. Since then I have been devouring every episode. Ben is an insightful interviewer who can bring out deep and meaningful conversations with people. I have listened to several episodes more than once. The length of each one is perfect and he has interviewed so many photographers that I would like to have a conversation with. These interviews are so complete that they make me feel as if I were there myself asking the questions. I highly recommend subscribing to A Small Voice.

It is such a pleasure to listen to Ben and his interviews. They are thoughtful, in depth, and provide such interesting insight into the work of many great photographers. He seems to pull more from the interviewees than I see elsewhere and his love for the art is so seriously apparent. This is a great podcast. Wonderful guests. What stands out the most is that it’s less of a back and forth and more of a true conversation. Guests seem comfortable and really open up and share. Highly recommend it.

Concise, clear minded Ben Smith always delivers a thought provoking intimate look into the minds of some of today’s leading photographers. All the interviews he conducts wether I’m familiar with the artist or not, leave me feeling informed and inspired.

This podcast is one of the very few amazing photographic shows out there. Insightful conversations and great interviews. This one, magic hour, and the halftone are doing things for the culture of young aspiring photographers who wish to learn all that they can, outside of a classroom they cannot be present in.

This podcast has slowly become more and more addictive since I first discovered it a year back. Today I’m listening to the hundredth episode and it clearly has become my favorite podcast. Ben’s journey has been honest : I’d actually encourage listeners to start with the 100th episode to learn more about creator Ben Smith. For any photographer, who desire a show that goes beyond talk about equipment and technique, this show provides a welcome alternative to all that white noise. Highly recommended.

I’ve listened to a few episodes of this podcast, not in any order, and I’ve loved them all. I think it helps me a lot to know what kind of photographs the guest makes for me to better grasp what’s going on and what they’re talking about. It’s really nice to hear what everyone has to say about their personal experiences working with the subjects, how they’re treated by others in the photo community, how some of their projects or images start and so many other things I’m leaving out. Honestly it’s a really amazing opportunity to just listen to what people have to say about their work and themselves because there are things that you can relate to so well if you are a photographer. Thank you for making this podcast and giving me the time to not die of boredom while at work and driving and also giving me the opportunity to pick these photographers’ brains second hand.

I've probably listened to over 1000 podcasts due to a long daily commute. This is one of my favorites. Been listening to the last 20 or so and really llike Ben's interview style, not overly hyped up like some of the USA ones. He covers photographers I would not otherwise know about, over a wide variety of styles and approaches. I bought one of the Hoxton Minipress books based on his interview ('People of London', by Peter Zelewski), it's great. Give it a try, I'm sure you will like it.

I have loved listening to so many of the interviews and hearing perspectives of all different types of photographers. It has helped me think more about my own work and what I want to say with it. Keep up the good work and asking great questions. Would definitely recommend.

Too many "photographers" of the late have no idea of the history or the theory behind what it takes to be a "photographer". Ben Smith's A Small Voice podcast is a breath of fresh air! I had no idea what they were talking about. It was like free association. They were at some kind of conference and talking about the value of meeting people and getting known. Both first and last time to listen.

It took me a while to get to Ben's podcasts but now that I have I am equally informed and inspired. A great diversity of photographic experience and talent is interviewed which is not necessarily unique, however Ben's ability to get under the skin and draw out insight with his thoughtful questions and easy-to-listen-to style most certainly is. Top stuff.
