The fact that the stories and experiences I relate to so much are shared by people that have some measure of “celebrity” makes it that much more powerful. For instance, I would never in my wildest dreams think I had anything in common with Moon Unit Zappa, but I could totally relate to her story. Thank you, Moon Unit, for sharing your story and thank you John Moe for this great podcast.

hannigan2017Down to earth and honest about mental healthI started listening to this show during a difficult time, and it surprised me how much it helped me feel connected to the world again. John’s interview style is so grounded and compassionate. I just listened to the interview with Joel Kim Booster and I was floored. It hit close to home, and I so appreciated both John and Joel Kim’s willingness to go into difficult territory together. Definitely recommend this podcast, as a way to better understand mental health and hear from some smart, funny people too.

So grateful for this work. A lifesaver many times over, in the most literal sense of the word.

Great comedy and deep depression often live in the same space. I first saw the great Johnathan Winters as a kid. It was not a surprise to discover years later that his mental health struggles were deep and lifelong.

I just finished listening to the Oct. 17 episode with Hrishikesh Hirway which is this beautiful and honest investigation into creativity, writer’s block, internal criticism, collaboration, and how to redefine success as an artist. I’m now recommending that episode to all my writer friends. This show always improves my mood, makes me feel part of a community, and reminds me that I can do this (this being life).

The shows are interesting, informative and have really helped me begin to understand mental illness. A variety of guests and and thoughtful questioning make it a must listen for me each week. The book was also excellent.

B. BirdellLots of good stuffI am 63 and saw my first therapist at age nine. I get stuff out of the podcast and I enjoy most guests. In life, I prefer talk therapy. There are no quick fixes and there are plenty of not great unworthy therapists. Keep looking until you find one!

hakdueubAlways learning with John MoeI’ve been listening to John Moe since one of his first episodes with Maria Bamford. As someone who lives with bipolar disorder and works as a school social worker, I learn something new in episode. This weeks episode with Dr. Duckworth - holy cow!!! So so so helpful, especially when I’m having a day that leaves me feeling a little helpless working in a rural school system in Wyoming. Literally took me less than 10min to order Dr. Duckworths book - it’ll be a great resource on my shelf right next to John’s own Hilarious World of Depression! This podcast, along with HWOD, has literally changed my life and provided a drive to fight the stigma of mental Illness, advocate for myself, and own the beauty and complications of living with bipolar disorder. Always thankful, John!!!

No one 😜Funny and very therapeutic“In truth, only some things are dumb.” - my favorite quotation from this podcast so far (from an ad during the episode with Elizabeth Ito) Seriously, though, this is such a helpful podcast to be able to listen to. It is very comforting to realize that people who have mental health struggles can actually be some of the most successful people, and in general it’s just incredibly refreshing to encounter such open, non-judgmental discussion of depression and anxiety.

RobinFerrisAwesome Show!John Moe is a treasure. I loved his previous show, “The Hilarious World of Depression,” and this one is equally excellent. The variety of topics and guests is excellent, and for me personally I love that it’s not preachy or pontificating and things are presented in a serious yet humorous and deeply human and caring way. John Moe isn’t a therapist, and that’s why I like the show. He’s a public radio host with a tragic personal story that makes him very relatable. Plus I just the feeling he’s legitimately a nice person.

I appreciate this show so much and recommend to everyone! Additional edit: just listened to episode 50. Patti and John talking about driving from Federal Way to Marysville and pulp mill smells gave me the warm fuzzy homey feelings. I recently moved from Tacoma, which I called home for years and I miss it terribly. We used to call the pulp smell “Tacoma aroma” 😂Wonderful episode.

quailApproachable talk about tough stuffNeeded to update my 3-star review from the beginning of the year. I stuck with it and am really glad I did. John seems to have found his footing and isn’t trying to impress, has a great mix of guests, and has landed on a compelling style of listening closely, drawing out guests with perceptive questions, and letting them shine. The topics are difficult so it is fantastic to hear smart people talk thoughtfully about them, normalize what so many of us deal with, and have a sense of humor about them. OLD: Loved the old show and was so glad this one came along, but it isn’t so much about dealing with mental illness anymore, more of a successful comedians doing bits kind of thing. I like the host a lot but it seems like at this point he’d rather be writing for a late night show or sitcom, so there’s a lot of talk about things like writing jokes on Twitter and not so much about the daily challenges of depression and so on.

If you have depression, this podcast will help you understand that you are not alone from very personal, relatable stories from both John and his guests. Many of his guests are names you will recognize and people who just happen to be really great story tellers and conversationalists. If you know someone who has depression, this podcast will help you understand the experience of depression in a non clinical, relatable way that some people with depression may not necessarily be able to express. Sounds like an oxymoron, but both podcasts are positive, uplifting, entertaining discussions about depression!

I like how John’s questions are more conversational and natural than the previous tightly scripted questions on THWOD. John himself is charming and relatable. He helps me reach an understanding of guests that I might have stopped listening to because I didn’t find them likable. As a bonus I’ve been introduced to new podcasts I love! Another more recent bonus is the meditation moment with Laura House. I already meditate but I like her fresh approach and this is a gift to anyone new to meditation. And if I haven’t taken time out to meditate that day, I get the opportunity to sit with them and other listeners out there.

J D P SLong episodes, not as great as THWODThe host is great, the guests are usually very insightful, and the topics under discussion are usually interesting, but the new format is meh, or rather, I'm not sure what was gained by moving on from The Hilarious World of Depression (other than changing distributors, I guess?). The recent episodes feel way too long – like long, meandering, under-edited conversations.

70 yr. old and white!Solid Bricks.I Love this podcast. As a retiree, I have the freedom to listen to podcasts all day, every day, and I have for many years. John Moe has consistently held a top 3 position for most loved. The recent show, inside ADHD, hit me over the head with buckets of bricks. I am 74 yrs. Old, and I just realized this for the very first time! I must borrow a lightbulb from Oprah. I had to stop to replay so many revelations that it took me two hours to listen to this one episode. Don’t miss it. And thank you for this work John. It finally got through, in a way that I can take to my therapist for real help.

The show may sound like it would be depressing, but most of the episodes are really hopeful because the guests mental health has improved over time. jag1152Depresh mode is fantastic!I so look forward to this podcast. I have a few diagnoses and work as a peer support specialist in Wisconsin. Hearing the perspectives of different people helps me keep in mind that we have different experiences and to keep an open mind. From this podcast I also get ideas to share with other people. I recommend the podcast to many people. Unfortunately, a lot of people have limited access to devices where they can get the podcast. Keep up the good work!!
