True Crime Psychology and Personality: Narcissism, Psychopathy, and the Minds of Dangerous Criminals

165

True Crime Psychology and Personality dives deep into the pathology behind some of the most horrendous crimes and those who commit them. We discuss topics like narcissism, psychopathy, sociopathy, and antisocial personality disorder from a scientifically informed perspective. What is a narcissist? What makes a person develop narcissistic personality disorder or become a psychopath? How do you spot a sociopath? What signs can you look for to protect yourself from these dangerous personalities? It's not just about the stories, it's about the science and psychology behind them.

Come for the crime analysis, stay for the political commentary
I started listening to the Todd Grande episode about the Christopher and Susan Edwards case in the UK, but stopped when he interjected a clunky non-sequitur statement about a U.S political figure, which had nothing to do with the case, and only seemed to be a snarky way of trying (unsuccessfully) to be funny. Stick to the case and leave your political views out of it.

    Laughably bad
Shallow and sexist analysis, if one could call it that

    Not very interesting.
I love this subject matter, but the host is really emotionless in his telling of it. Flat. There are more entertaining podcasts out there that deal with true crime. Sorry. Just doesn’t hole my attention, even though I love the topic.

Podcaster is best when he stays in his lane
I enjoyed and appreciated this poscast at the beginning when the podcaster stuck to his field of expertise. The commentary analyzing offender behavior in light of diagnostic criteria for various conditions and disorders was quite interesting and enlightening. However, the longer I listened the more he strayed from scientific analysis into questionable opinion. This was particularly noticeable to me when he commented on legal aspects of cases with which I am familiar. One egregious example: in discussing the prosecution of Ross Ulbricht he concluded that there was probable cause to believe that Ulbricht had operated Silk Road but that for various reasons (several of them irrelevant) this fact had not been proved beyond a reasonable doubt. Among other things, he completely ignored, perhaps because he didn’t know enough about the facts, that Ulbricht literally was caught red handed, in possession of a laptop that was logged on to an admin account on the Silk Road site. He also minimized or ignored the fact that Ulbricht paid for the assassination of various enemies and was pleased to receive photographic “proof” that those acts had been carried out. Under federal sentencing law, those acts were legitimately taken into account by the judge (who happens to be female, contrary to the podcaster’s narrative) even though they were not charged. To suggest that Ulbricht’s sentence was excessive under all of the circumstances is a legitimate opinion (which I do not happen to share) but in the case of this podcaster, it is just a lay person’s opinion. I was hoping to hear the podcaster’s behavioral analysis of Ulbricht’s conduct in the manner of his much earlier episodes, where his background and expertise might enlighten his listeners on how an Eagle Scout strayed so far from Boy Scout values, and why having been offered a sweetheart plea deal, he insisted on going to trial. Same issue with the episode on Harold Henthorn, disappointed at the lack of analysis.

    Crap at the end!
I really like this podcast. However, I gave it a low rating because of the “extra” podcast at the end. I don’t know why I can’t fast forward through content I have absolutely no interest in.

    Stop Spamming
Please stop spamming other shows with ads for this one…hosts voice is very weasel-like and disturbing
  • CrimeResearcher
    Smart and insightful
This 5-star rating is given for the Kirsten Lobato episode, which was particularly well done. The host’s puns and alliterative summaries are the best (and only?) in the true crime business and are much appreciated by this listener.

    Love this pod!
As a psychology professor, I have a special interest in these stories and Todd’s analyses. I love the little sarcasm bombs and puns he mixes in from time to time. His deadpan delivery makes them even funnier.

    Surface level, bad takes
In the Joe Campbell episode you had a man illegally trespassing on another man’s land… multiple times. The trespasser has been warned, threatened, and yet still refuses to stay off the property going so far as to pull out bolt cutters to break in. The hosts blames the property owner. The host claims in the episode where the drunk woman killed the couple that being intoxicated doesn’t change your personality. The host smears the police in the episode where the woman at the hospital died of a stroke on the way to prison. Would rather have heard about the stress police officers go through nightly with suspects who lie and become violent. The psychological impact on the police would be more interesting than just listening to a podcaster bash them. The other episodes were no better. Overall the show and the host has gotten pretty much every case wrong and provided no interesting psychological insight.

    Maybe not the worst, but…
Having read the "about" section of the podcast called, I was excited about a somewhat different approach in the true crime genre. however, now that I've listen to several episodes, I can't say I've heard anything that remotely resembles what the "about"section promises. It's just a very flat reading of each crime. There is none of the promised deep dive into the psychology of the crime etc. I found it to be a disappointment, if it hadn't and built up as a psychological approach, it would at least be a tolerable listen.

    Thank you
I love this podcast. I’m so glad you changed that spooky music at the beginning. It was super weird and incongruous with the “scientific perspective” tag line.
  • Psychologically Speaking
    Judgemental
Uses bad jokes to shame the guilty. No scientific perspective used in this podcast.

Midlife crisis. Recent empty nester. No-where job. Extremely short. Miserable angry man. Probably spent free time staring at porn. The internet has a powerful impact on the psyches and the gates of evil are too much for men to resist. The bullet, the gun, the voice, his image on the bridge. All is not known to the public. I’ll agree w/u on one thing; it appears many mistakes were made. But if Carter says he’s the one, You can be sure the right man is in jail.

    Love all aspects
Even if I didn't love the content of this podcast, which I do, I'd still give it 5 stars for the deadpan humor and his ability to distill the essence and absurdity of human behavior.

    Love Dr Todd Grande 👍🏼
If you’re looking for an unbiased source of info… Dr Todd Grande absolutely delivers. He’s not a rambler or annoying, like other podcast. Straight and to the point…. He will not disappoint!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Totally didn’t mean to rhyme, that last line. 😂
  • brendahappy
He is liberal, too bad he is mixing his political views into his assessments etc..
I heard him out, listened to different topic episodes and his regurgitation of psychology (psychology to include all topics on this podcast), was impressive in his delivery style of orating but he is shallow when it comes to the spiritual part of the human being. That in itself is his business, but when the podcast title suggests a clear topic derived information from science, science always welcomes more data from all sources. This is not what he promotes. His poo pooing of perspectives other than his liberal, socialist views was glib in his presenting and if no one was looking, he is the type of person who says “haha, beat that” only to himself. That is my perspective of his show. He dusted off satan on one episode as though there is not a spiritual battle we have been fighting here on earth since the fall of Adam and Eve. Just to be cheeky.. I think he believes in aliens, cheeky but NOT kidding. If he dared to volunteer and study Hospice, and the people dying with Hospice support, he may begin to take caring of his soul that God gifted him with, very serious. Time is going by fast, I’ll say a prayer for you to use your incredible gifts to bring souls to God and not worship the evil of the world. I gave him a two star because he is intelligent and he is trying to help, unless he is just reading off of a board, lol. His indifference to the whole person is immature and grates my nerves but he is trying to help. Trust in God, read scripture and detach from worldly pleasures and your transformation will have nourishment to grow your soul in relationship with Jesus. Pray for miracles, St. Andre from Montreal.

    Sophomoric at Best
Uninformed and not well researched. It’s like the host does a 10 minute Google search so he can offer a poorly delivered and not well thought out opinion that’s isn’t based on actual psychology.
  • A Callender
    To opinionated
I hear enough of people’s negativity on social media. Then can’t get through two episodes of this podcast without hearing whining things in the news. Extremely unprofessional from someone who claims to be a “professional”. Skip this - there are tons of other podcasts like this to choose from.

Mercifully, I only listened to a portion of one episode. I can tell this guy is a democrat without knowing a thing about him.

    Disappointed
I was really enjoying this till I got to Allen v Farrow. I felt he really missed the mark on this . I encourage everyone to listen to Real Crime Profile Allen v Farrow and you will walk away with a different opinion and it is broken down in great detail.

    Bad jokes good psychology
This guy really thinks he’s clever and funny but he’s really not. His jokes make me cringe. He’s very monotone, but the psychology is interesting and educational.

    Dr. grande is my favorite!
After spending many years working as a therapist in a very well known acute forensic psychiatric facility for men, I came across Dr. G’s YouTube channel. I found it to be excellent both from a clinical perspective, for Dr. G’s humanity, and his fantastic delivery (best sense of humor, the type that is de rigueur if you work in a place like I did). I loved his book, and I am beyond thrilled with the podcast.

    My Favorite Podcast
This podcast is by far my favorite. I am a mental health therapist and am always excited to learn more about mental health and diagnoses. I enjoy hearing Dr. Todds Grande’s analyses, and I've learned a plethora of information from this podcast alone. Dr. Todd Grande is extremely intelligent and I would recommend this podcast to anyone who wants to learn more about crime, mental health diagnoses, psychopathy, the dark triad, different factors that play a role in criminality, and much more!☺️

I also like his YouTube channel. All of his insights are fascinating and his sense of humor is icing on the cake!

    Background Sound Distracting
Doctor Grande is very knowledgeable and understands the DSM5 as if he wrote it. I gave this podcast three stars because of the totally distracting theatrical background sounds. My mind keeps wondering from the presentation to the background audio. I dislike the battle for my attention.

Dr.Grande is the Bernie Sanders of psychology
I remember the (relatively) early days of Dr.Grande on YouTube, and it’s wonderful to see him blow up into the reluctant star-powerhouse he was destined to be.

To the family and friends of Lacey Peterson
There is no doubt in my mind that Scott Peterson is guilty. Still. And to say that homicide detectives don’t have the skills of human behavior observation or a well seasoned psychologist ( eye roll )screams narcissistic personality. That episode is my last. It was kinda interesting to listen, but kinda was the operative word. But Scott Peterson deserves another trial? And better to let 10 guilty get off than 1 innocent get convicted as an argument for Scott Peterson really makes me think the good doctor here has his own personality disorder. Which actually, is not all that uncommon.

So excited to have found this podcast!
I listen to Dr. Todd Grande on Youtube as if the videos are podcasts and came here to check if there was something of the sort and boom! Dr. TG is here already on it! You rock!

    Prefer his YouTube channel
I have just started listening, but so far I prefer his YouTube channel (which I highly recommend). Perhaps it is just the medium and the podcast will improve as he gets more comfortable. These are less smoothly edited than the podcast, and maybe what I’m feeling is the learning curve of working with another person. I truly miss his very dry sense of humor and hope that will be incorporated here. I hope the podcast works out because this format is a lot easier for me.

    Love Dr Grande
Dr Grande speaks the truth about psychology issues and does so without bias and in an understandable way. So far the podcasts I've listened to are focused on a topic without a particular person in mind.

    True Crime for Intellectuals
I am a big fan of Dr. Grande’s successful YouTube channel. His true crime videos have always been my favorite of his content. As such, I was excited to learn he had a true crime podcast. Dr. Grande’s expert analyses continue here. I appreciate his well-researched and well-rehearses approach, as I am not a fan of ‘stream of consciousness’ podcasts. I feel both smarter and entertained after listening to him. *****/*****

    PsychoBabble
This PhD is authority on criminal psychopathology. There are better in the field. As a psychologist (UCLA grad) I found this discourse sincere in an attempt to explain psychopathic behavior, but rather longwinded and superficial.
