Banned Books

95

Welcome to Banned Books, where we read and converse with the rebel children, the holy mischief-makers of God, who fight against the kind of useless religious, spiritual, and moral methods of life improvement that seeks to smother the glory of God in Jesus Christ. We want to introduce you to those who forgot everything except Jesus Christ and him crucified. We all struggle with fear of being last, lost, least, littlest, and dead, and so we are here to encourage, challenge, provoke, and maybe even offend you by introducing you to theologians who at one time or another were banned by their church, declared dangerous, or simply vilified for daring to confess that Christ alone is the way, truth, and life. Welcome rebel children, holy mischief makers, and fools for Christ. This podcast is for you.

I love these guys! They are the ones who always proclaim I'm forgiven of my sins, no matter who they are reviewing. And the coffee is great! I truly owe them a beer in heaven! Jesus has been gracious to deliver His grace from these sheepdogs. No one knows the trouble I've seen...Nobody knows but Jesus!

    Insight!
A long format that is easy to listen to! I have so much to learn.

    Disappointing
I am looking for well-informed podcasts on Flannery O’Connor. This wasn’t one of them. The podcasters said Flannery O’Connor had a PhD. She didn’t. The podcasters said there are Catholics in Georgia because King George was Catholic. He wasn’t. I’ll continue to look for podcasters who do more thorough preparation and don’t just make stuff up.

    A great listen!
So many great nuggets of wisdom come out of their discussions.

    Refreshing
I grew up in an ELCA church. After confessing Christ, I joined nondenominational church. I just found this podcast and I appreciate them for so many reasons. They are truly Lutheran and fully Christ centered. And they are quite humorous as they share great reflections on banned books.

    Listen to other 1517 podcasts
I have appreciated some of the other 1517 podcasts, but this is a no-go. The general smugness here will lead me to encourage others to stay away and listen to some of the other 1517 offerings.

    Appropriate
Pastor Donovan and Pastor Christopher are perfect interlocutors in a podcast format that is most appropriate for this life. We cannot surround ourselves enough with both the hearing of the Word and hearing their insights as we travail through this vale of tears simultaneously saint and sinner.

Unfocused. Off topic. Annoying, predictable political commentary. I like other 1517 people like Chad Bird and Gretchen Ronnevik, but these two give off a real frat bro vibe.

    Yes, yes and yes
My husband said I should give these guys a listen and I am so glad I did. Banned Books is the only podcast of its kind. In a time where so many people are afraid to speak the truth, these living legends do so unabated. We need more pastors like them and there is hope, because of them.

    Valuable Voices
Great podcast, they are the reason I read on the incarnation. Really great conversations that cover a broad range while bringing everything back to The Cross.

Transgressive, funny conversations about theological and philosophical books and topics
The titles on these podcasts are hilarious; the podcasts usually compare well the titles. I’m always entertained on some level as these two guys go deep on historical figures, ideas, books, and thought projects they are working on. A great show.

    Always Interesting and Insightful
I love these podcasts for their insight and bantor. I learn something knew every episode, and it is thought provoking every moment, while entirely entertaining. I listen one to two times a week. I sort of wish they came out a little closer to when recorded, because unlike some other reviews here, I like the comments on current affairs and I'd like to be concurrent with the discussion instead of a few weeks ahead of an episode just now coming to air.

    Banned Books- My Joys Affirmed
Though I’m relatively new to the whole 1517 community, this is one of the several enriching shows I have begun to listen to regularly. I’ve been journeying into “old books” anyways to get fresh air from the past and these guys have made this journey to the past nicely guided. I’m recently married so I’m seeking great resources to strengthen my understanding of Jesus so that I may lead my wife toward God’s way faithfully and wholeheartedly. Thank you guys for facilitating this ongoing look into the power of God’s promises and Word as it is viewed from previous witnesses in throughout history! Thanks be to God for the ongoing great work happening here.

    Be Challenged
No podcast challenges me as much as this one. Plus it’s funny! My only critique (as a not very smart person) is that sometimes I feel like a ton of major problems are laid out and then at the end I just feel like, “Okay. What do I/we do about it? What now? Etc...”

    Recommended Listening
Banned Books podcast is recommended listening if you enjoy having fun while learning something. For all of 2020, this podcast kept me sane. The hosts pull no punches when it comes to following truth wherever it may be found, whether it’s the Bible, Martin Luther, or Nietzche. They read authors across the buffet bar of God’s truth and have an honest conversation about it. What about the hosts? Well, they are knowledgeable and funny which is a winning combination. They are also dedicated to the fact that words have meanings — you know, that words are not open to re-interpretation, corruption, or mangling to suit an agenda. Check out this podcast. Do it. NOW.

    Politics + Religion
Every political podcast has me leaving in anger when I’m done listening...however, the fact this this is a religious-based podcast that incorporates politics here & there, it has me leaving feeling better than when I started. Thank you 💜

    The Anti-Doors of Durin
The Banned Books Podcast was my enchanted entryway into the beautiful halls of a lost freedom. It first appeared miraculously, like a hidden door that only reveals itself in a full-moon. After typing “C.S. Lewis” into the search bar of Spotify, a curious greeting at the top of the queue beckoned me onward into a labyrinth of peace previously unknown and only imagined: “Piss Off, Athanasian Ghost!” I entered through the door. I wish I could explain the beauty of what I found beyond that mantle, but sometimes mortal words fail us. Rather than a Balrog-dwelling, goblin-infested prison of death, I found myself in a haven, a garden of peace, grace, forgiveness, and life that seemed to only stretch its roots deeper and deeper into the fabric of existence, showing me things I had only dreamt possible in the fairy-stories of Tolkien and Lewis. It was through this door that I discovered the “Great Hall of Dwarrowdelf” itself - 1517. Ushered in by those sweet and gracious words “Christ for You,“ I marveled at the beauty of true freedom. Then I began exploring. Through one corridor, I discovered the catacomb of the Thinking Fellows who became a type of home for me the following year. Then came “40 Minutes in the Old Testament” with Chad Bird, “30 Minutes in the New Testament,” “Let the Bird Fly,” “Freely Given,” “Outlaw God,” “The Craft,” and the “Christian Historic Almanac.” 2 1/2 years after stumbling through the doorway, opened by sentinels Riley and Gillespie, I am still mining away, discovering as much freedom as I can, but not for myself. No, I was freed immediately. Now, I mine these halls to free others and bring them home. I’m a regular dwarf in these halls, though an elf by appearance. It’s only because of the grace given me that I am welcome here, and I never want to leave. Before, I searched tirelessly for self-actualization before I came to terms with it’s futility. Now, Christ’s actualization, given 2000 years ago on a cross, has loosed the self-imposed chains of a law-based spirituality. Buried in this cavern, my voice has been added to the beckoning call of “Christ for you.” Thank you, Pastors Riley and Gillespie, for delivering the good news to me and so many others. (And for making such good coffee!) I give a 5 star rating if for no other reason than their gospel proclamation. However, the good news is that their content is also amazing. If you’ve read all the way to the bottom of this review, don’t waste any more time - walk through the doors. And remember, “the rumors of grace, forgiveness, and the redemption of all things are true. Everything is going to be okay.” - (Dan Van Voorhis, The Christian History Almanac)

    Unfortunate
The first 150 episodes were fantastic. I always learned something about an author, a book, theology, etc. It has just turned into political diatribe. Not saying I disagree. It isn’t why I listen to podcasts. There are better political podcasts if that’s what I want. Sorry to see.

    Straightforward Talk
There simply is no other podcast that delivers the insight into theological writings that I’ve received from Riley and Gillespie. Top it off with personalities that complement to make discussions sharp yet sincere. Banned Books is a treasure in the 1517 network.

I heard Donovan Riley on Ringside With the Preacher Men, another great podcast, and the dude blew me away. Was laying down the knowledge. I subscribed and no regrets here. Next-level excellence. Thanks so much. God Bless.

    Treasure Trove
These Pastors are very knowledgeable, engaging and relevant. I love their topics and insights on christianity, theology, philosophy, culture, politics, ethics, the literature of various authors both christian and non-christian, coffee roasting, and BJJ. They tackle very difficult and sensitive issues in a loving way through a Confessional Lutheran Christian lens. I like how they also are willing to acknowledge the difference between non-negotiable scriptural truths and mysteries that God has not revealed to us in scripture. In matters of adiaphora, they will also acknowledge when they are giving their opinion on a matter without trying to bind your conscience when it's not warranted. Keep up the great work!

    Unfortunate change
It started out as a great podcast. I love their Biblically based theology. But lately Riley has gone all political and is out of his element and unaware of that fact. I regret that I must unsubscribe. Fortunately one of Riley’s teachers, Steve Paulson, has started a podcast, Luthers Outlaw God, and I will be using my time to listen there instead.

    Great Podcast, Great Network
I found 1517 a few years ago through a recommendation for the Thinking Fellows podcast, and from there I have gone through almost all of the podcasts on this network and backlogging through them to get all of the wonderful content that they have put out. I graduated from a Lutheran institution a few years ago and was a bit burnt out on my faith, but I can honestly say that these podcasts have been the main reason why my faith has been revitalized and has become even stronger these past few years. I have found myself being reintroduced to topics I learned in my schooling as well as hearing new views and opinions about Lutheranism as well as Christianity in general, which has been super helpful in expanding my view on my faith and how I approach my faith in a practical way. They have a wide range of topics that are covered as well as a good variety that allows you to find something good to listen to no matter your background or knowledge base in theology. Definitely do yourself a favor and listen to some of the other podcasts on this network if you haven’t yet.

    Thoughtful Christianity
The Banned Books podcast is great banter, with a deep knowledge of the history of the Gospel. It has been great to read authors and hear how they have influenced the church. “Rage on against the dying of the light!”

Makes me feel knowledgable without having to read the books themselves!
I am a big fan of As Lutheran As It Gets, so Banned Books is a treat. Every episode delves into a part of an author's work, to look at how they present the Gospel and whether Jesus is even present in their text. I really enjoyed the one on The Idiot by Dostoyevsky; it remined me of college literature classes - in a good way. The pastors' approach to criticism is pointed, direct, but never personal - demonstrating that you can disagree with someone without demonizing them. Every episode is worth the time. Particularly the one on The Idiot... but I'm biased.
  • lnewland
    Lutheranism at its best!
I wait every week for the next episode of Banned Books. It’s intelligent, remarkably Lutheran, and will get you hooked. Pastors Gillespie & Riley bring the goods every week and never disappoint. Stay strong fellas!
  • Museikguy
One of the best theological Podcasts
This is one of the best and clearest theological podcasts out. For those burnt on American religion, Riley and Gillespie never waver from the main thing, Jesus crucified FOR YOU. In a landscape of introspection and subjectivity, this podcast isn’t afraid to be honest about our need for something (someone) to come and rescue us from our own depravity. They do so in an easy to listen to format, throwing out the occasional comedic zinger while never departing from real hope for us all.

    Beware, you might become Lutheran
This show has become one of the highlights of my work week. Their explaination of the Lutheran view of the Sacraments answered several questions and cleared up a few misconceptions I had as a once strong Calvinist. Now I'm a Lutheran, having to relearn everything I thought I once knew. Thanks guys!

    Great Podcast!
Pastors Gillespie and Pastor Riley do a tremendous job at pointing out the pitfalls in various streams of Christian theology. Lots can be learned from them as they critique Christian teaching that strays from the proper use of Law and gospel. The material they cover and some of the books they suggest has really broadened my understanding on a multitude of issues. Check them out!
  • kevncarlin
    Very Wittenberg
Pastors Riley and Gillespie apply cultural expertise and humor in a very accessible balance. Give it a try, maybe start with an author you have some experience with. Not for Lutherans only, but with an extra relevance for Lutherans.

Intelligent & Interesting Conversations that Isolate
I’m just a few hopped around episodes in,and this review may be jumping the gun. I have been diving into all the 1517 podcast including banned books. I find this podcast to be ungenerously critical and slightly condensing. Especially during a recent episode that ASSUME a lot on an author, throwing their own feelings and perceptions on to the author. Most of 1517 seems to also cater to a certain demographic - leaving listeners like me to be standing out looking in. And for how critical they are on certain topics and subjects they seem to have no problem with that.

    Calling Things What They Are
Pastors Riley and Gillespie call a thing what it is, in good Lutheran fashion. This show is an incisive exegesis of the human bondage to sin and the unbinding Word of the Gospel of Christ. This podcast doesn't waver from its theological core, but it also never gets redundant, thanks to the hosts' clear friendship and seasoned chemistry. When I listen, I am reminded how readily we cover up the naked gospel with conditions, and I appreciate how steadily the hosts work through the best and the worst of Christian writings to identify the law and the gospel in operation. Keep up the good work, gentlemen! Thank you.

    A new favorite?
I was hooked on The Thinking Fellows podcast after a friend shared it on Facebook. Their analysis and wisdom has been a joy to listen to week after week. I believed I had found a new favorite show or book. However! It took the equally brilliant discussions of this podcast, Banned Books, mixed with an invigorating historical element of literally banned books to top them. The great thinking of modern and historical minds that rises from this show teases your own thinking with its combination of history, theology, and in this case, a hint of scandal. - always an avid reader, I’m not sure how to finish Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s “The Idiot” in time to pick up next week’s book too.

You Don’t Have to he Lutheran to Enjoy
I was listening to the conversation about Billy Graham and found it very enlightening. With respect and honor, Riley and Gillespie get to “the bone” of Pastor Graham’s sermons. I’m now curious to listen to their conversation on Fyodor Dostoevsky novel The Idiot (I recently listened to a BBC rendition). Excellent commentary and intriguing conversation and I like their bumper music. And yes, I am a Baptist!!!

    So Much To Chew On
I've been a Lutheran for almost two years now. Finally getting Apple Podcasts and finding the treasure trove of confessional Lutheran podcasts there has been a tremendous blessing! "Banned Books" is so helpful, giving snippets of a wide variety of good works and analyzing them through a Lutheran lens. The part I actually like most is the side tangents Prs. Gillespie and Riley go on during the course of some episodes. It's done well, not detracting from the topic at all, but is fascinating hearing their thoughts on so many things. Keep up the good work, gentlemen, and thanks for sharing all you've learned with the rest of us. :)

Batman and Robin - The Dynamic Duo
I can never remember your names so I simply call you "The Dynamic Duo" to friends and family. As someone who grew up in "Church" but never heard the Gospel, I had nearly thrown in the towel until an equally disgruntled friend introduced me to Martin Luther's "Commentary on the book of Galatians". To learn that Christ crucified is ALL I need day in and day out is truly the greatest news I've ever heard. My brain is still doing back flips trying to unlearn all of the garbage I was taught for all of those years. I'll be honest. I don't have a clue how to think critically. But listening to you two, Batman and Robin, banter back and forth, chewing on statements with a healthy bit of skeptisism, discerning whether or not such statements drive us to Christ and Him crucified for the forgiveness of our sins, or away from Him and to ourselves, I think, helps me get a glimpse of what critical thinking in action sounds like. Thank you for your tenacity in teaching and preaching Christ crucified ALONE for the forgiveness of my sins. -Kevin-

    Always look forward to it
I’m not well versed in theology. This podcast teaches me something new every episode without being over my head.

    The Proper Distinction!
Great podcast! Excellent for all, but especially beneficial for “compare and contrast” learners (like me). The Pastors do a great job comparing historical Christian teachings, practices, and emphases “within” the Church, as well as comparing Christianity to “worldly” religions and philosophies. As an added bonus, any martial artists in the audience (like me), will “get a kick” out of how Pastor Riley sometimes teaches theology using jujitsu and kick boxing analogies.

Love the historical perspective and clarity you guys bring to every episode. Clearly well educated, informed, and insightful!

    Expanding Your Knowledge of Theology
I’ve been listening to the Banned Books Podcast since I started college last August. Although there are quite a few podcasts on the 1517 network this one is by far my favorite. The breaking down of heretical (and non-heretical) texts and their theologies is a great way to learn where these theologies are rooted in, how they came to be, what scripture is taken out of context, and how to dispute them.
